Background: When coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mitigation efforts waned, viral respiratory infections (VRIs) surged, potentially increasing the risk of postviral invasive bacterial infections (IBIs). We sought to evaluate the change in epidemiology and relationships between specific VRIs and IBIs [complicated pneumonia, complicated sinusitis and invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS)] over time using the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) dataset.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of all prospectively collected pediatric (<19 years old) and adult encounters at 58 N3C institutions, stratified by era: pre-pandemic (January 1, 2018, to February 28, 2020) versus pandemic (March 1, 2020, to June 1, 2023).

Purpose: Social support is a crucial protective factor against psychological concerns in patients with cancer. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the differential impacts of social support on cancer worries and depressive symptoms in patients undergoing genetic counseling for hereditary cancer. The current study utilized a high-volume database from a multi-site cancer genetics clinic to assess the impact of perceived social support on depressive symptoms and cancer worries among patients of different age groups (young versus older patients) and diagnosis status (diagnosed survivors versus undiagnosed).

  • The Society of Critical Care Medicine Pediatric Sepsis Definition Task Force worked on creating and validating new clinical criteria for identifying pediatric sepsis and septic shock, focusing on organ dysfunction metrics.
  • This research involved a large-scale international study across 10 healthcare systems, collecting data on nearly 3.6 million children over nine years to derive and test the new criteria.
  • The final scoring system, named the Phoenix Sepsis Score, was developed from a 4-organ-system model, demonstrating varying effectiveness in predicting mortality through different performance metrics during validation.

Importance: Sepsis is a leading cause of death among children worldwide. Current pediatric-specific criteria for sepsis were published in 2005 based on expert opinion. In 2016, the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3) defined sepsis as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, but it excluded children.

Dairy systems require that each cow calves annually to have an efficient milk production cycle. In systems where milk production is maximized, the male offspring from dairy breed sires tend to have poor beef production traits and, therefore, can be of low economic value. Few studies have been published on the factors impacting early slaughtering of calves in peer-reviewed literature.

Recent evidence suggests that protecting human amnion and chorion matrices (HACM) during processing enhances the performance of HACM for wound repair and tissue regeneration. We utilised a diabetic (db/db) delayed wound healing mouse model. Treatment of db/db full-thickness excisional wounds with HACM, processed with a polyampholyte preservative accentuated the proliferative phase of wound healing that decreased the time necessary to heal wounds.

Article Synopsis
  • Common data models standardize electronic health record (EHR) data but struggle to fully integrate the necessary resources for deep phenotyping.
  • The OMOP2OBO algorithm automates the mapping of Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) vocabularies to Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) ontologies, significantly reducing the need for manual curation.
  • With OMOP2OBO, mappings for a large number of conditions, drugs, and measurements were created, facilitating the identification of undiagnosed patients in rare diseases and enhancing opportunities for EHR-based deep phenotyping.

Background: Identifying children ready for transfer out of the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is an area that may benefit from clinical decision support (CDS). We previously implemented a quality improvement (QI) initiative to accelerate the transfer evaluation of non-medically complex PICU patients with viral bronchiolitis receiving floor-appropriate respiratory support.

Objectives: Design a CDS tool adaptation of this QI initiative to further accelerate transfer evaluation of appropriate patients.

An 18-year-old girl presenting with respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms was found to have COVID-19 pneumonia and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). She was transferred to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for ongoing mechanical ventilation and initiation of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) for management of progressive hypoxic respiratory failure. She developed a worsening cough with associated life-threatening desaturation events that impaired ECMO flow and required deep sedation.

Limited research has explored depression and cancer worries (CWs) among adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYAs) seeking genetic counseling. This study evaluated depressive symptoms and CWs among five groups: AYAs, adolescents and young adults without cancer (AYAWOCs), older adults with cancer (OAs), older adults without cancer (OAWOCs), and older adults diagnosed with cancer in their adolescent and young adult years (OA/AYAs). A retrospective data analysis was performed on 6524 patients, which found that AYAs reported significantly higher depressive symptoms and CWs compared with all other groups except OA/AYAs.

Metabolic (dysfunction)-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) affects a third of the population and is a leading cause of liver-related death. Since no effective treatments exist, novel approaches to drug development are required. Unfortunately, outdated terminology and definitions of the disease are hampering efforts to develop new drugs and treatments.

The unique challenges burn patients face along the trajectory of recovery necessitate an interdisciplinary team approach to care. As much as providers rely on care-team members for delivery of optimal treatment, the patient must be an active collaborator in their care. Optimal burn recovery outcomes hinge on treatment adherence.

Introduction: Specific criteria for de-escalation from the PICU are often not included in viral bronchiolitis institutional pathways. Variability of transfer preferences can prolong PICU length of stay. We aimed to decrease the time from reaching floor-appropriate heated high flow nasal cannula (HHF) settings to the transfer decision by 20% through standardizing PICU-to-floor transfer assessment in a PICU bronchiolitis cohort.
