Physical activity provides clinical benefit in Parkinson's disease (PD). Irisin is an exercise-induced polypeptide secreted by skeletal muscle that crosses the blood-brain barrier and mediates certain effects of exercise. Here, we show that irisin prevents pathologic α-synuclein (α-syn)-induced neurodegeneration in the α-syn preformed fibril (PFF) mouse model of sporadic PD.

Although ELL-associated factors 1 and 2 (EAF1/2) have been shown to enhance RNA polymerase II-mediated transcription , their functional roles are poorly known. In this report, we show functions of these proteins in regulating ELL stability through their competitive binding with HDAC3 at the N terminus of ELL. Reduced HDAC3 binding to ELL causes increased acetylation leading to reduced ubiquitylation-mediated degradation.

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events.

We report high-precision measurements of the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) cross section at high values of the Bjorken variable x_{B}. DVCS is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon, which provide a three-dimensional description of its internal constituents. Using the exact analytic expression of the DVCS cross section for all possible polarization states of the initial and final electron and nucleon, and final state photon, we present the first experimental extraction of all four helicity-conserving Compton form factors (CFFs) of the nucleon as a function of x_{B}, while systematically including helicity flip amplitudes.

We study the dynamic control of birhythmicity under an impulsive feedback control scheme where the feedback is made ON for a certain rather small period of time and for the rest of the time, it is kept OFF. We show that, depending on the height and width of the feedback pulse, the system can be brought to any of the desired limit cycles of the original birhythmic oscillation. We derive a rigorous analytical condition of controlling birhythmicity using the harmonic decomposition and energy balance methods.

Given the risk of facing difficulties and social discrimination, questions may arise on the consequences of revealing non-heteronormative gender identity and sexual orientation. Group A streptococcus (GAS) necrotizing fasciitis (NF) causes high morbidity and mortality despite prompt intravenous administration of antibiotics, surgical soft-tissue debridement, and supportive treatment in the intensive care unit. Since there is no effective vaccine against GAS infections, a comprehensive understanding of NF pathogenesis is required to design more efficient treatments. In this work, we report a facile synthesis of graphene oxide-gold (GO-Au) nanocomposites by electrodeposition. The fabricated electrochemical immunosensors are utilized for the dual detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antigen and SARS-CoV-2 antibody. Introduction: Pompe disease is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of acid-α-glucosidase (GAA), an enzyme responsible for hydrolyzing lysosomal glycogen. A lack of GAA leads to accumulation of glycogen in the lysosomes of cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle cells, as well as in the central and peripheral nervous system. Enzyme replacement therapy has been the standard of care for 15 years and slows disease progression, particularly in the heart, and improves survival.

The ratio of the nucleon F_{2} structure functions, F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p}, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from ^{3}H and ^{3}He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio.

In idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD), pathologic αSyn aggregates drive oxidative and nitrative stress that may cause genomic and mitochondrial DNA damage. These events are associated with activation of the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) immune pathway, but it is not known whether STING is activated in or contributes to α-synucleinopathies. Herein, we used primary cell cultures and the intrastriatal αSyn preformed fibril (αSyn-PFF) mouse model of PD to demonstrate that αSyn pathology causes STING-dependent neuroinflammation and dopaminergic neurodegeneration.
