Background: Vertebral artery compression syndrome is a rare condition defined as the clinical presentation of dizziness, vertigo, ataxia, dysarthria, dysphagia, progressive or acute paralysis, hemisensory loss, and cervical myelopathy secondary to compression of the medulla and upper spinal cord by the vertebral artery.
Case Description: Here we describe a 57-year-old Mexican-American male with bulbar symptoms, positional vertigo, and diplopia. The patient's symptoms were managed through microsurgical decompression of the medulla utilizing a far lateral transcondylar approach.

Here, we introduce a human-derived commensal organism, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt), into the guts of germ-free mice to determine whether and how the genetic requirements for colonization shift over time. Combining a high-throughput functional genetics assay and transcriptomics, we find that gene usage changes drastically during the first days of colonization, shifting from high expression of amino acid biosynthesis genes to broad upregulation of diverse polysaccharide utilization loci.

Here, we report a crystal structure of Rad6 and the non-RING domain N-terminal region of Bre1, which shows an asymmetric homodimer of Bre1 contacting a conserved loop on the Rad6 'backside'. Magnetic fields can be generated in plasmas by the Biermann battery when the electric field produced by the electron pressure gradient has a curl. The commonly employed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model of the Biermann battery breaks down when the electron distribution function is distorted away from Maxwellian. Using both MHD and kinetic simulations of a laser-plasma interaction relevant to inertial confinement fusion we have shown that this distortion can reduce the Biermann-producing electric field by around 50%.

A questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 250 occupational therapists throughout the United States who chose physical disabilities as their specialty section. Results demonstrated that, while most therapists use crafts to some degree in their therapy programs, other treatment modalities such as therapeutic exercise and activities of daily living were used a greater percentage of the time.
View Article and Find Full Text PDF4-year-olds made same and different judgments about pairs of stimuli requiring detailed comparison in 2 conditions: a judgment-only condition and a justification condition in which children explained the reasons for their judgments. The systematic comparison strategies revealed in the justifications indicated that all children had definite criteria for "same" and "different" although about two-thirds of the children used a criterion that differed from the adult criterion. Judgments were more accurate in the justification than in the judgment-only condition, suggesting that overt verbalizations and gestures may provide a beneficial external support for completion of a child's own visual comparison strategy.
