Mixed Transcortical Aphasia (MTA) is an infrequent aphasic syndrome, characterized by poor comprehension and production in oral language abilities and poor performance in written language abilities. However, individuals with MTA typically retain the ability to repeat. Our patient, a woman who suffered from a left hemisphere ischemic stroke involving perisylvian areas, presented with repetition preserved for words, non-words, sentences and numbers, together with marginally preserved reading abilities.

The treatment of SE follows a step-wise approach, with limited data on ideal antiseizure medications (ASMs) for refractory and super refractory SE (RSE/SRSE). Perampanel (PER), an AMPA receptor antagonist, has shown promise in animal models but still has limited data in humans.

However, these pathologies impair brain function through different mechanisms even when they occur at the same brain's location. The aim of this study was to compare the profile of cognitive impairment in patients with brain tumors vs.

At this stage, mitral valve repair becomes mandatory to avoid permanent myocardial injury. However, which technique among neochoardae implantation and leaflet resection provides the best results in this scenario remains unknown.

By avoiding a complete opening of the sternum, this surgery is traditionally associated with a faster recovery, less surgical pain and less postoperative bleeding and transfusions. With its growing popularity, the need for specifically designed surgical instrumentation is evident.

Here, we test if the OCS administered acutely in stroke patients provides useful information in predicting long-term functional outcome. A group of first-time stroke patients (n = 74) underwent an acute behavioral assessment comprising the OCS and the NIHSS within one-week post-stroke.

Methods: We prospectively included 88 consecutive patients with Barlow's disease referred to our Institution from February 2021 to May 2022. All enrolled patients underwent 24-h Holter monitoring before surgery.
Introduction: We describe a systemic neoplastic cryoglobulinemic vasculitis presenting as a large vessel occlusion (LVO) syndrome. We focus on a rare presentation of a rare condition.
Case Report: A 68-year-old man was admitted to the Stroke Unit of Padova with a right middle cerebral artery syndrome.
Background: Insulin secretion and glucose tolerance is annually assessed in patients with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) through oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) as a screening measure for cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. We aimed to describe the distribution and provide reference quartiles of OGTT-related variables in the Italian cystic fibrosis population.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of PwCF receiving care in three Italian cystic fibrosis centers of excellence, from 2016 to 2020.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of specific local nasal immunotherapy (LNIT) in patients with allergic rhinitis.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective single-center study of 324 patients with allergic rhinitis (191 allergic to mites, 133 allergic to Grarninaceae or Parietaria pollen) treated with specific LNIT was carried out. As control group, 158 patients without allergic rhinitis were enrolled.
Background: Nasal vestibulitis (NV) and nasal vestibular furunculosis (NVF) are two infectious processes of the nasal vestibule, sharing common etiology, the same risk of complications, and similar treatment while remaining two different pathological entities.
Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature research on NV and NVF in PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases, with the aim to review the evidence on these two conditions and discuss the therapeutic approaches.
Results: We identified a total of 248 records; according to our inclusion/exclusion criteria, 27 of them, published over a period of 59 years (1962-2021), were included in this review.
The aim of this retrospective study is to show medium-long-term results in terms of cardiac death and aortic events in patients undergoing reduction ascending aortoplasty between 1997 and 2009 in our hospital. The Fine and Grey model for competing risk analysis was performed for time to cardiac death, with non-cardiac death as the competing risk, and time to recurrence of both re-dilation (aortic diameter > 45 mm) and re-operation with overall death as the competing risk. Paired t-test was used to evaluate the change in aortic diameter from the post-operative values to follow-up.

This study evaluated whether the type of annuloplasty device affects the long-term durability of the repair.
Methods: We selected 296 consecutive patients with severe mitral regurgitation due to Barlow disease who underwent edge-to-edge mitral repair at our institution between 2004 and 2013.
Objective: Diabetes is a frequent comorbidity in cystic fibrosis (CF), related to multiple unfavorable outcomes. During the progression of β-cell dysfunction to diabetes, insulin deficiency could possibly reduce the anabolic support to grow even in the absence of significant glycemic derangements. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated whether prepuberal insulin secretory indices are independent predictors of adult height.

Methods: All patients treated with isolated TV repair or replacement from March 1997 to May 2020 at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed and assessed for mid-term postoperative outcome according to a novel classification [stages 1-5 related to the absence or presence and extent of right heart failure (RHF)]. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to estimate mid-term survival.
In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in the correlation between hearing impairment and cognitive decline, two conditions that have demonstrated a strong association. Hearing loss appears as a risk factor for cognitive impairment, especially among certain populations, notably nursing home residents. Furthermore, hearing loss has been identified as a modifiable age-related condition linked to dementia, and it has been estimated that midlife hearing loss, if eliminated, might decrease the risk of dementia in the general population.

The most reliable option has been proven to be the RT-PCR, which allows to detect virus RNA on a specimen from a high viral load site, such as nasopharynx. Nasopha-ryngeal sample collection is possible by means of a nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) and is a practical and relatively non-invasive technique, but rather bothersome for the recipient.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLaryngeal carcinoma is the second common malignancy of the upper aerodigestive tract after lung cancer; in most cases is a squamous cell carcinoma, whose risk factors include tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption. Despite therapeutic progress, the five-year overall survival rate for this malignancy has remained nearly 50% and many patients already present metastasis at the time of diagnosis. To date, there are no tools that predict the evolution of laryngeal carcinoma: in this light, during the last years, many studies were planned with the aim to investigate the role played by different biomarkers expressed by larynx cancer, which can help make an early diagnosis, predict disease evolution and direct therapeutic choice.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNeurological deficits following stroke are traditionally described as syndromes related to damage of a specific area or vascular territory. Recent studies indicate that, at the population level, post-stroke neurological impairments cluster in three sets of correlated deficits across different behavioural domains. To examine the reproducibility and specificity of this structure, we prospectively studied first-time stroke patients ( = 237) using a bedside, clinically applicable, neuropsychological assessment and compared the behavioural and anatomical results with those obtained from a different prospective cohort studied with an extensive neuropsychological battery.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the immediate and long-term outcomes of patients with moderate aortic regurgitation at the time of MV surgery.
Methods: We included 183 patients admitted to our institution for elective treatment of MV disease between 2004 and 2018, in whom moderate aortic regurgitation was diagnosed during preoperative evaluation.
