Introduction: A detailed three-dimensional (3D) evaluation of microvasculature is evolving to be a powerful tool, providing mechanistic understanding of angiomodulating strategies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microvascular architecture of nerve allografts after combined stem cell delivery and surgical angiogenesis in a rat sciatic nerve defect model.

Materials And Methods: In 25 Lewis rats, sciatic nerve gaps were repaired with (i) autografts, (ii) allografts, (iii) allografts wrapped in a pedicled superficial inferior epigastric artery fascia (SIEF) flap to provide surgical angiogenesis, combined with (iv) undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and (v) MSCs differentiated into Schwann cell-like cells.

It was hypothesized that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) could provide necessary trophic factors when seeded onto the surfaces of commonly used nerve graft substitutes. Obesity is a major risk factor for breast cancer, especially in post-menopausal women. In the breast tissue of obese women, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)-dependent prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production has been correlated with inflammation and local estrogen biosynthesis via aromatase. Using a mouse model of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene/medroxyprogesterone-acetate (DMBA/MPA)-induced carcinogenesis, we demonstrated that an obesogenic diet promotes mammary tissue inflammation and local estrogen production, and accelerates mammary tumor formation in a COX-2-dependent manner.

In this communication, we report an ultrasound-assisted method, utilising human red blood cell (RBC) or erythrocyte membranes, to produce acoustically active "bubbles", intended for vasculature imaging. The resulting RBC membrane bubbles have an average size of 1.5 μm with a generally spherical morphology, altered internal aqueous compartment contents, and small gas-containing protrusions or "pockets" in between the membrane bilayer.

We present a 24-year-old female with an obturator internus muscle abscess that extended across the obturator membrane and into the hip joint. Decompression of the intrapelvic abscess through hip arthroscopy was planned after close examination of preoperative images.

Objective: The objective of this study was to present the results of a consecutive series of 120 cases treated with spinal laser interstitial thermal therapy (sLITT) to manage epidural spinal cord compression (ESCC) from metastatic tumors.

Methods: The electronic records of patients treated from 2013 to 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. Data collected included demographic, pathology, clinical, operative, and imaging findings; degree of epidural compression before and after sLITT; length of hospital stay; complications; and duration before subsequent oncological treatment.

Substance use is a frequently cited health risk behavior in the youth gang literature, yet little is known about how substance use patterns vary among gang-involved youth or the social ecological factors that contribute to potential variation. Developing relevant and effective service approaches will require an understanding of this variation and the malleable factors that are likely to promote or inhibit particular patterns of use. Using latent class analysis, we identified four substance use classes within a school-based sample of gang-involved youth (n = 2,770): Non-Users (38%), Past Users (15%), Casual Users (27%), and Frequent Multi-Users (21%).

  • Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) is associated with a greater risk of secondary cancers, but the specific impact of radiation therapy (RT) on this risk is not well understood.
  • In a study of patients with germline TP53 mutations, 14 out of 40 identified LFS patients received RT and half of them developed subsequent malignancies, mostly within the same area treated by radiation.
  • The findings suggest that these subsequent cancers were more likely to be recurrences of the original cancer rather than new malignancies caused by RT, indicating that RT can be beneficial when discussed in a multidisciplinary context.

In the treatment of localized Ewing sarcoma (EWS), delays in local therapy are known to adversely impact overall survival (OS). However, the role of treatment center volume in EWS outcomes, and the interaction between center volume and local therapy timing with definitive radiotherapy, remains unknown. Using the National Cancer Database, we demonstrate that treatment at the lowest EWS volume centers is associated with reduced OS, explained partly by higher rates of delayed local therapy.

Cnidarian fluorescent protein (FP) derivatives such as GFP, mCherry, and mEOS2 have been widely used to monitor gene expression and protein localization through biological imaging because they are considered functionally inert. We demonstrate that FPs specifically bind amyloid fibrils formed from many natural peptides and proteins. FPs do not bind other nonamyloid fibrillar structures such as microtubules or actin filaments and do not bind to amorphous aggregates.

We introduce a new method for the analysis of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) data. The new method can use data near the asymptotes and does not give undue weight to responses on the flatter parts of the dose-response curve. We apply it to simulated data and to two real-world assays and show it is more accurate and more precise than the traditional interpolation method.

We describe the institutional guidelines of a major tertiary cancer center with regard to using hypofractionated radiation regimens to treat glioblastoma as a measure to minimize exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) while not sacrificing clinical outcomes. Our guidelines review level one evidence of various hypofractionated regimens, and recommend a multidisciplinary approach while balancing the risk of morbidity and mortality among individuals at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19 infection. We also briefly outline strategies our department is taking in mitigating risk among our cancer patients undergoing radiation.

Proteins are manufactured by ribosomes-macromolecular complexes of protein and RNA molecules that are assembled within major nuclear compartments called nucleoli. Existing models suggest that RNA polymerases I and III (Pol I and Pol III) are the only enzymes that directly mediate the expression of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) components of ribosomes. Here we show, however, that RNA polymerase II (Pol II) inside human nucleoli operates near genes encoding rRNAs to drive their expression.

There is an urgent need to measure the impacts of COVID-19 among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). We conducted a cross-sectional survey with a global sample of gay men and other MSM (n = 2732) from April 16, 2020 to May 4, 2020, through a social networking app. We characterized the economic, mental health, HIV prevention and HIV treatment impacts of COVID-19 and the COVID-19 response, and examined whether sub-groups of our study population are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
