Linear α-olefins (1-alkenes) are critical comonomers for ethene copolymerization. A major impediment in the development of new homogeneous Fe catalysts for ethene oligomerization to produce comonomers and other important commercial products is the prediction of propagation termination rates that control the α-olefin distribution (, 1-butene through 1-decene), which is often referred to as a -value. Because the transition states for propagation termination are generally separated by less than a one kcal mol difference in energy, this selectivity cannot be accurately predicted by either DFT or wavefunction methods (even DLPNO-CCSD(T)).

Quantum-mechanical-based computational design of molecular catalysts requires accurate and fast electronic structure calculations to determine and predict properties of transition-metal complexes. For Zr-based molecular complexes related to polyethylene catalysis, previous evaluation of density functional theory (DFT) and wavefunction methods only examined oxides and halides or select reaction barrier heights. This study investigates the effect of the enzymatic polymerization of lignosulfonate for the formulation of a lignosulfonate-based adhesive. For this, beech lamellas were glued together and tested according to the EN 302-1 standard. The results showed that the laccase-polymerized lignosulfonate-based wood adhesives (LS-p) had similar mechanical properties as a standard carpenter's glue (PVAc-based D3 class white glue), as no significant difference in tensile shear strength between these two adhesive types was found.

Chemically bleached cotton fabric was treated with phytic acid (PA), chitosan (CH) and urea by means of layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition to impart flame retardant (FR) behavior using only benign and renewable molecules. Samples were treated with 8, 10, 12 and 15 bilayers (BL) of anionic PA and cationic CH, with urea mixed into the aqueous CH solution. Mediator 12 (MED12) and MED13 are components of the Mediator multi-protein complex, that facilitates the initial steps of gene transcription. Here, in an Arabidopsis mutant screen, we identify MED12 and MED13 as positive gene regulators, both of which contribute broadly to morc1 de-repressed gene expression. Both MED12 and MED13 are preferentially required for the expression of genes depleted in active chromatin marks, a chromatin signature shared with morc1 re-activated loci.
