Introduction: Radical cystectomy (RC) is a challenging procedure with significant morbidity, though remains the standard of care treatment for many patients with bladder cancer. There has been debate regarding the utility of universal risk calculators to aid in point-of-care prediction of complications in individual patients preoperatively. We retrospectively evaluated the predictive value of the ACS NSQIP universal surgical risk calculator in our patients who underwent RC.

Increasing the metabolic capacity of Escherichia coli for hydrogen production through heterologous expression of the Ralstonia eutropha SH operon.

Background: Fermentative hydrogen production is an attractive means for the sustainable production of this future energy carrier but is hampered by low yields. One possible solution is to create, using metabolic engineering, strains which can bypass the normal metabolic limits to substrate conversion to hydrogen. Escherichia coli can degrade a variety of sugars to hydrogen but can only convert electrons available at the pyruvate node to hydrogen, and is unable to use the electrons available in NADH generated during glycolysis.

[Conditions linked to the integration of the ecologic approach to the programming of prevention-promotion offered to elderly clients by the CSSS of Quebec: a case study].

This multiple case study investigates conditions influencing the integration of the ecological approach in disease prevention and health promotion (DPHP) programs offered to older adults by local health organizations in Quebec. Scheirer's (1981) implementation model guided the study of five Centres de Santé et Services Sociaux chosen in line with the ecological dimension of their DPHP programs. Documentary analyses were conducted along with thirty-eight semi-structured interviews among professionals and managers.

Quantitative analysis of the relative transcript levels of four chlorophenol reductive dehalogenase genes in Desulfitobacterium hafniense PCP-1 exposed to chlorophenols.

Relative to those of unexposed cultures, the transcript levels of the four CprA-type reductive dehalogenase genes (cprA2, cprA3, cprA4, and cprA5) in Desulfitobacterium hafniense PCP-1 were measured in cultures exposed to chlorophenols. In 2,4,6-trichlorophenol-amended cultures, cprA2 and cprA3 were upregulated, as was cprA5, but concomitantly with the appearance of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP). In 3,5-DCP-amended cultures, only cprA5 was upregulated.

Identification and characterization of a novel CprA reductive dehalogenase specific to highly chlorinated phenols from Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain PCP-1.

Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain PCP-1 reductively dechlorinates pentachlorophenol (PCP) to 3-chlorophenol and a variety of halogenated aromatic compounds at the ortho, meta, and para positions. Several reductive dehalogenases (RDases) are thought to be involved in this cascade of dehalogenation. We partially purified a novel RDase involved in the dechlorination of highly chlorinated phenols from strain PCP-1 cultivated in the presence of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol.

[Integration of health promotion in the field of nursing].

Health promotion is one of many strategies deployed by nurses. Documents and field experience suggest a partial integration of such interventions. A detailed analysis of available literature shows that such an assertion might be premature for three reasons: 1) the integration of health promotion in nursing has been the subject of only a limited number of empirical studies, 2) definitions of health promotion developed through nursing are some of the most frequently quoted and 3) elements of contemporary discourse are often enclosed in these definitions.

Patient evaluation of a discharge program following a radical prostatectomy.

Purpose: The immediate postoperative period following radical retropubic prostatectomy (RP) can be stressful, especially if men perceive discharge teaching to be incomplete. In this study, using two telephone interviews, patient satisfaction with a revised teaching program on one urology unit was evaluated.

Methods: Men undergoing a RP were given an information letter about the study at the pre-admission clinic.

Glycosylation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1244 pilin: glycan substrate specificity.

The structural similarity between the pilin glycan and the O-antigen of Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1244 suggested that they have a common metabolic origin. Mutants of this organism lacking functional wbpM or wbpL genes synthesized no O-antigen and produced only non-glycosylated pilin. Complementation with plasmids containing functional wbpM or wbpL genes fully restored the ability to produce both O-antigen and glycosylated pilin.

Serotonergic nerve fibers in the primary olfactory pathway of the larval sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus.

In this study, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5HT)-immunoreactive (5HT-IR) neuronal fibers were identified in the primary olfactory pathway of the sea lamprey. These neurons are likely part of a nonolfactory neural system that innervates the olfactory sac. Cell bodies with 5HT immunoreactivity predominated in the lamina propria of the rostral portion of the nasal cavity and were less prevalent adjacent to the olfactory epithelium.

[Use of a mix of lidocaine and butorphanol as a caudal epidural anesthesia in a mare].

Loss of rear motor control is the main limiting factor in the use of caudal epidural anesthesia in the horse. In man and laboratory animals, a small dose of an opiate combined with a local anesthetic enhances analgesia without impairing motor function. Thus, the amount of local anesthetic administered may be reduced.

The anatomy of the male genital system of the beluga whale, Delphinapterus leucas, with special reference to the penis.

The genital organs of four male adult beluga whales and one newborn animal were dissected and the main characteristics are described. As in other species of cetaceans, the testes and the greatest part of the penis are located inside the abdominal cavity. The penis has a sigmoid flexure and belongs to the fibroelastic type with a thick tunica albuginea and a small amount of vascular spaces in the erectile tissue.

Weights of skeletons, several viscera (heart, lungs, empty stomach and intestine, liver, spleen, kidneys) and muscles of 80 muskrats were taken. The data were analyzed and compared versus four classes of ages and sexes: adult males, adult females, sub-adult males and sub-adult females. The weight of the muscles is 47 to 50% of the live-weight in the four classes studied.

The cardiac arteries and veins are described in the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) following the injection of the vessels of 15 hearts with either latex, vinyl plastic or barium sulfate. The left coronary artery gives off the typical circumflex and paraconal interventricular branches which supply the left atrium and ventricle and part of the right ventricle and interventricular septum. The right coronary artery vascularizes the right atrium and ventricule and by means of its subsinuosal interventricular branch, part of the left ventricle and interventricular septum.
