Optic Neuritis After SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination.

Background: To describe recent cases of optic neuritis in patients who received a vaccine for COVID-19.

Methods: Retrospective case series of patients diagnosed with optic neuritis after a recent COVID-19 vaccination with BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech), in one university-affiliated tertiary hospital, from January 2021 to June 2021. Data were obtained from medical charts.

Modification of intraocular lens insertion using 4-flanged fixation with a standard cartridge and a 2.4 mm corneal incision in eyes with no capsular support.

Intrascleral 4-flanged technique for in-the-bag intraocular lens subluxation.

Unlabelled: The mosquito-borne West Nile virus (WNV) is responsible for outbreaks of viral encephalitis in humans, horses, and birds, with particularly virulent strains causing recent outbreaks of disease in eastern Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Australia. Previous studies have phylogenetically separated WNV strains into two main genetic lineages (I and II) containing virulent strains associated with neurological disease. Several WNV-like strains clustering outside these lineages have been identified and form an additional five proposed lineages.

Predictors of response to Infliximab in children with luminal Crohn's disease.

Objective: A significant proportion of patients with initial response to Inflximab (IFX), subsequently lose response (LOR). Multicentre paediatric studies report LOR in 33% to 50% with 3-5year follow-up. Our retrospective study examined durability of response and predictors of LOR.

Determinants of attenuation in the envelope protein of the flavivirus Alfuy.

Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus endemic to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Most strains of MVEV cause potentially fatal cases of encephalitis in humans and horses, and have been shown to be highly neuroinvasive in weanling mice. In contrast, the naturally occurring subtype Alfuy virus (ALFV) has never been associated with human disease, nor is it neuroinvasive in weanling mice, even at high doses.

The effects of variability in three parameters (mass, cross-linking with CH2O, and EtO sterilization) of three surgically implantable absorbable collagen sponges (ACS) were studied. Sponges soaked with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) solution were analyzed for pH, conductivity, and rhBMP-2 precipitation. A method using trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid was developed to quantify the free amino groups of the collagen sponge.

We have investigated the anti-tumor activity of ex vivo activated and expanded T cells which had been sensitized in vivo to one of two different syngeneic rat glioma cell lines; D74 or RT-2. Rats were sensitized by inoculation of irradiated tumor cells into each hind foot pad. After 10 days, the tumor-draining lymph node (DLN) from each popliteal region was excised and prepared as a single cell suspension.

Endosymbiotic chloroplasts in molluscan cells contain proteins synthesized after plastid capture.

Endosymbiotic chloroplasts within the cells of the ascoglossan slug Elysia chlorotica synthesize a variety of proteins including the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCO) and the photosystem II protein D1. In addition, the effects of protein synthesis inhibitors suggest that some chloroplast-associated proteins are synthesized in the animal cytosol and subsequently translocated into the chloroplasts. Thus, the plastids not only synthesize proteins during this long-lived association, but the host cell seems to play a role in plastid protein turnover.

Biodegradable polymer scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Synthetic polymer scaffolds designed for cell transplantation were reproducibly made on a large scale and studied with respect to biocompatibility, structure and biodegradation rate. Polyglycolic acid (PGA) was extruded and oriented to form 13 microns diameter fibers with desired tenacity. Textile processing techniques were used to produce fibrous scaffolds with a porosity of 97% and sufficient structural integrity to maintain their dimensions when seeded with isolated cartilage cells (chondrocytes) and cultured in vitro at 37 degrees C for 8 weeks.

The CCR4 protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains a leucine-rich repeat region which is required for its control of ADH2 gene expression.

The CCR4 gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae is required for the transcription of the glucose-repressible alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH2). Mutations in CCR4 also suppress the transcription at the ADH2 and his4-912delta loci caused by defects in the SPT10 (CRE1) and SPT6 (CRE2) genes. The CCR4 gene was mapped to the left arm of chromosome I and cloned by complementation of function using previously isolated segments of chromosome I.

Evaluation of the CASPAR alcohol education curriculum.

The CASPAR education-prevention program was initiated when experimental results indicated that a 5-hr alcohol education curriculum at a Catholic high school was able to reduce frequent intoxication among teenagers. Attempts to institutionalize such a program in the public schools shows that (1) alcohol education can generate widespread community and school support; (2) workshops can successfully train teachers to adopt a decision-making approach, though close supervision is needed to ensure that this approach is adhered to in classroom teaching; (3) the CASPAR model of alcohol education produces classroom situations conducive to many children feeling free to express alcohol-related concerns; (4) trained teachers can serve as intermediaries between students with alcohol-related concerns and community resources, in particular those resources that are designed to help children from families with alcoholism; (5) the CASPAR curriculum, implemented by trained teachers, produces statistically significant knowledge and attitude gains, whereas alternate programs such as a special-events approach produce smaller knowledge gains and little attitude change; and (6) to a considerable extent, knowledge and attitude gains persist over time, although retention is greater on knowledge items and among older students. The results suggest that there may be a behavioral impact of instruction in the form of reduced alcohol misuse among teenagers, although if there is, it requires intensive and repeated exposure and can be demonstrated in these data only among younger students while they remain in junior high school.

Thyroid hormones and the energetics of active sodium-potassium transport in mammalian skeletal muscles.

1. The steady-state heat production rate (E) of soleus muscles obtained from adult mice in various thyroid states was measured in a perfused microcalorimeter. The ouabain-suppressible fractions of E and 42K influx were compared and the energetic efficiency of active Na-K transport assessed.

The problem-oriented medical record as a training tool for staff.

After numerous deficiencies were found in a psychiatric center's medical records, a task force devised a system that incorporated the four components of the problem-oriented medical record plus other elements required by the center's structure. They divided the record into ten sections and also developed a four-page form for recording the patient's assessment and treatment plan. Two-hour mandatory training sessions were held to teach all levels of mental health staff how to use the new system; various kinds of follow-up instruction were also given.

High-sensitivity device for continuous measurements of tissue O2 uptake.

An analysis system for continuous measurements of O2 uptake by rat diaphragm during several hours is described. The tissue was set in a chamber where a medium was flowing at a known and constant flow rate, temperature, and partial pressure of oxygen (PO2). The decrease in PO2 of the medium was measured with a Clark O2 cathode at the outlet of the chamber.
