Background/objectives: Weight loss outcomes vary individually. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based evaluation of adipose tissue (AT) might help to identify AT characteristics that predict AT loss. This study aimed to assess the impact of an 8-week low-calorie diet (LCD) on different AT depots and to identify predictors of short-term AT loss using MRI in adults with obesity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and consistency of conventional MRI in diagnosing biceps pulley lesions, using arthroscopy for comparison.* -
  • Analyzing MRI results from 68 patients, the researchers found that MRI had high sensitivity (around 95%) and moderate specificity (about 61-80%) for identifying pulley lesions, with good agreement among radiologists.* -
  • The most reliable indicators included biceps tendinopathy and defects in specific ligaments, while subluxation/dislocation of the tendon was less reliable in sensitive detection but more specific.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find early postoperative indicators that could predict complications after total cavopulmonary connection surgery, analyzing factors like pulmonary artery pressure, arterial pressure, oxygen saturation, and lactate levels.
  • A total of 249 patients, primarily young children, were evaluated, with specific postoperative measurements showing significant correlations with various complications, such as chest tube drainage and adverse events.
  • Key findings included optimal cut-off values for pulmonary artery pressures and mean arterial pressures that could help predict complications, emphasizing the importance of early monitoring in improving patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares amino acid PET scans and conventional MRI to predict overall survival in patients with recurrent high grade glioma undergoing bevacizumab therapy.
  • Five studies with 72 patients revealed that PET-positive patients had significantly lower median survival compared to PET-negative patients.
  • The findings suggest that AA-PET is more effective than RANO MRI in predicting overall survival, with higher sensitivity and area under the curve values.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed lung ultrasound (LUS) patterns in COVID-19 patients to see how they relate to CT scans and clinical states.
  • 52 patients were evaluated, and specific ultrasound features were scored and compared to their outcomes and CT results over a 60-day period.
  • While LUS scores showed some correlation with the patients' health status, they did not strongly correlate with CT findings, suggesting LUS could provide additional but different insights into lung condition.

Amino acid PET is an established method to assist differential diagnosis of therapy-related changes versus recurrence in gliomas. However, its diagnostic value in brain metastases is yet to be determined. The goal of this study was to summarize evidence on the diagnostic utility of amino acid PET in recurrent brain metastases.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to analyze the role of temporal muscle and particularly tendon pathology in patients suffering from craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) using magnetic resonance imaging.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective analysis of MRI examinations was carried out with regard to temporal muscle fibrosis and fatty degeneration and particularly temporal tendon rupture, thickening, and degenerative signal alterations. Descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used for statistical evaluation.

Background Right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) stenosis after repair of tetralogy of Fallot has been linked with favorable right ventricular remodeling but adverse outcomes. The aim of our study was to assess the hemodynamic impact and prognostic relevance of right ventricular pressure load in this population. Methods and Results A total of 296 patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (mean age, 17.

Aims: Inefficient ventricular-arterial (V-A) coupling has been described in Fontan patients and may result in adverse haemodynamics. A varying amount of aortopulmonary collateral (APC) flow is also frequently present that increases volume load of the single ventricle. The aim of the study was to assess changes in V-A coupling and APC flow during exercise CMR.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a pandemic. Bacterial superinfections seem to be associated with higher mortality in COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs). However, details on the prevalence and species distribution of secondary infections are limited.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has led to limited data on bacterial co-infections in patients and their effects on treatment outcomes during the pandemic.
  • A study of 140 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 revealed that co-infections were infrequent, primarily occurring in critically ill patients, with common antibiotic treatments adhering to local guidelines.
  • The findings suggest the need for more research on the role of antibiotic use in COVID-19 management to avoid overuse and improve patient outcomes, especially in those with severe cases.

For acute medicine physicians, distinguishing between asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) and clinically relevant urinary tract infections (UTI) is challenging, resulting in overtreatment of ABU and under-recognition of urinary-source bacteraemia without genitourinary symptoms (USB). We conducted a retrospective analysis of ED encounters in a university hospital between October 2013 and September 2018 who met the following inclusion criteria: Suspected UTI with simultaneous collection of paired urinary cultures and blood cultures (PUB) and determination of Procalcitonin (PCT). We sought to develop a simple algorithm based on clinical signs and PCT for the management of suspected UTI.

Purpose: The concept of dysphagia/aspiration-related structures (DARS) was developed against the background of severe late side effects of radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). DARS can be delineated on CT scans, but with a better morphological discrimination on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Swallowing function was analyzed by use of patient charts and prospective investigations and questionnaires.

Purpose: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a potential role in energy and glucose metabolism in humans. Thyroid hormones (TH) are main regulators of BAT development and function. However, it remains unknown how the magnetic resonance (MR)-based proton density fat fraction (PDFF) of supraclavicular adipose tissue used as a surrogate marker for BAT presence relates to TH.

Background: This study investigated predominant microorganisms causing community-onset bacteraemia at the medical emergency department (ED) of a tertiary-care university hospital in Germany from 2013 to 2018 and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns.

Methods: Antimicrobial resistance patterns in patients with positive blood cultures presenting to an internal medicine ED were retrospectively analysed.

Results: Blood cultures were obtained at 5191 of 66,879 ED encounters, with 1013 (19.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated whether immediate oncoplastic surgery (ONC) impacts local control rates when combined with adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in breast cancer patients, comparing it with standard breast-conserving surgery (NONC).
  • The research included 965 patients, revealing no significant difference in local control rates, progression-free survival (PFS), or overall survival (OS) between the ONC and NONC groups after a median follow-up of 67 months.
  • Findings suggest that immediate oncoplastic surgery does not adversely affect the effectiveness of adjuvant whole breast radiotherapy in maintaining local control over breast cancer.

Introduction:  Systemic lupus erythematodes (SLE) represents an autoimmune disease with a highly variable clinical course affecting numerous organs. Hepatic manifestation seems to be rare. It is not clear whether hepatic disease in SLE is of any prognostic importance or whether it correlates with disease activity.
