Unlabelled: The aims of this study are to assess patients' preferred and perceived decision-making roles and preference matching in a sample of German breast and colon cancer patients and to investigate how a shared decision-making (SDM) intervention for oncologists influences patients' preferred and perceived decision-making roles and the attainment of preference matches. This study is a post hoc analysis of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) on the effects of an SDM intervention. The SDM intervention was a 12-h SDM training program for physicians in combination with decision board use.

Methods: Physicians who treat patients with cancer were invited to participate in a cluster-randomized trial and carry out SDM together with breast or colon cancer patients who faced decisions about their treatment.
Background & Aims: Increasing evidence points toward a role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the etiology of malignant lymphomas. However, previous epidemiologic studies were limited in size to establish an association between HCV infection and specific lymphoma subtypes. We performed a large, multicenter, case-control study to address this question.

In this randomized trial, we compared the immunogenicity of primary vaccination with 2 doses of an experimental adjuvanted HB vaccine (adjuvant system 04 containing aluminium and monophosphoryl lipid A [HB-AS04]) to that of 3 double doses of a licensed HB vaccine in 93 liver transplant candidates. Depending on the waiting list for liver transplantation, a booster dose of HB-AS04 or double booster dose of the licensed HB vaccine was given before or after surgery, at 6 to 12 months after initiation of the vaccination course.

Mutations in the Hjv and TfR2 gene cause hemochromatosis. We investigated the expression and cellular localization of Hjv and TfR2 in rat and human liver.

The extension of treatment duration beyond 48 weeks is one possible strategy to address this problem.
Methods: The efficacy and safety of 48 weeks (group A, N = 230) vs 72 weeks (group B, N = 225) of treatment with pegylated-interferon-alfa-2a (180 microg/wk) plus ribavirin (800 mg/day) were studied in treatment-naive patients with HCV type 1 infection.
Early treatment of acute hepatitis C with interferon alpha-2b for 24 weeks prevents chronic infection in almost all patients. Because pegylated interferons have replaced conventional interferon in the therapy of chronic hepatitis C, the aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of an early treatment of acute hepatitis C with peginterferon alpha-2b. Between February 2001 and February 2004, 89 individuals with acute HCV infection were recruited at 53 different centers in Germany.

Since the introduction of combined systemic chemotherapy with 5-folinic-acid (FA) and/or oxaliplatin or irinotecan, the median survival in patients with advanced colorectal cancer has increased to more than 20 months. Novel agents in so-called targeted therapies such as monoclonal antibodies will further increase these excellent survival data in the near future.

Cases (n = 529) were consecutive patients newly diagnosed with a lymphoid malignancy between 1998 and 2002 in 4 centers in Spain.

In this study we evaluated whether polymorphisms in the hemochromatosis gene HFE and the transferrin receptor gene TFR1 are associated with these typical findings. The study considered 246 HCV-infected patients and 200 blood donors as controls, in which C282Y, H63D, and S65C mutations ( HFE) and the S142G polymorphism ( TFR1) were detected.
