Haemoglobin (Hb) adducts from aromatic amines (AAs) are well established biomarkers of exposure. Tobacco smoking and occupational exposure are major sources of AA Hb adducts. The origin of background levels in non-smokers and non-occupationally exposed humans are largely unknown.
