Recruitment and enrollment of participants in an online diabetes self-management intervention in a virtual environment.

Effective recruitment of research participants is essential for successful randomized controlled trials and remains one of the most challenging and labor-intensive aspects of conducting research. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe recruitment methods for this two-group, internet-based intervention trial and enrollment status in relation to recruitment methods, accounting for accrual rates and recruitment costs and to discuss our recruitment results and limitations informed by the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative (CTTI) team's evidence and expert-based recommendations for recruitment. The primary study was a two-group randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the efficacy of a virtual environment, Diabetes LIVE©, compared to a traditional website format to provide diabetes self-management education and support to adults with type 2 diabetes.

Investigating the Oxidation Step in the CuCl-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Coupling Reaction of -Aryl Tetrahydroisoquinolines.

The oxidative coupling of -aryl tetrahydroisoquinolines with nucleophiles has inspired the development of novel C-H functionalization reactions as well as mechanistic studies. Here, we investigate the oxidation step that forms iminium ions as key intermediates in the method using CuCl as the catalyst and oxygen as the terminal oxidant. A strong electronic effect of substituents in the N-aryl ring was found by synthetic studies and a Hammett plot analysis, supporting initial electron transfer from the amine to Cu(II).

Integrative Review of Recruitment of Research Participants Through Facebook.

Background: Facebook (FB) has been widely used recently to recruit participants for adult health research. However, little is known about its effectiveness, cost, and the characteristics of participants recruited via FB when compared to other recruitment methods.

Objectives: The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the published evidence concerning the use of FB in participant recruitment for adult health research, as compared to other social media, online, and traditional recruitment methods.

Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians: Principles of Care Guidelines.

Patient use of integrative oncology (the inclusion of nonconventional treatments alongside the conventional standard of care) continues to grow, with some studies showing its use in cancer patients to be as high as 91%. Naturopathic physicians are primary care providers who use integrative therapies to deliver patient-centred care. The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (oncanp) was formed in 2004 as a specialty association for naturopathic physicians providing integrative cancer care (nd oncs).

Knowledge and behaviours related to oral health among underserved older adults.

Objective: To examine the mouth and body knowledge, beliefs and behaviours of Dominican, Puerto Rican and African American older adults, and their relationships to oral and general health and health care.

Background: In his seminal framework, Handwerker posited that the norms, attitudes and behaviours related to the experience of disease and treatment reflect where patients live and have lived and are seeking and have sought care, along with their webs of social and health relations. This framework guides the analysis for the present study, wherein qualitative data are used to understand mouth and body knowledge, beliefs and behaviours among racial/ethnic minority older adults, ie, why individuals do what they do and what it means to them.

Recruitment of racial/ethnic minority older adults through community sites for focus group discussions.

Background: Despite a body of evidence on racial/ethnic minority enrollment and retention in research, literature specifically focused on recruiting racially/ethnically diverse older adults for social science studies is limited. There is a need for more rigorous research on methodological issues and the efficacy of recruitment methods. Cultural obstacles to recruitment of racial/ethnic minority older adults include language barriers, lack of cultural sensitivity of target communities on the part of researchers, and culturally inappropriate assessment tools.

The Use of Medical Marijuana in Cancer.

The use of medical marijuana in cancer care presents a dilemma for both patients and physicians. The scientific evidence is evolving, yet much of the known information is still insufficient to adequately inform patients as to risks and benefits. In addition, evidence-based dosing and administration information on medical marijuana is lacking.

Naturopathic Oncology Modified Delphi Panel.

Unlabelled: Naturopathic oncology is a relatively new and emerging field capable of providing professional integrative or alternative services to cancer patients. Foundational research is critical to identify topics in the clinical and research development of naturopathic oncology for future growth of the field.

Study Design: This study implements a modified Delphi protocol to develop expert consensus regarding ethics, philosophy, and research development in naturopathic oncology.

Acute myeloid leukaemia after treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in girl with Bloom syndrome.

Bloom syndrome (BS) is an inherited genomic instability disorder caused by disruption of the BLM helicase and confers an extreme cancer predisposition. Here we report on a girl with BS who developed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) at age nine, and treatment-related acute myeloid leukaemia (t-AML) aged 12. Measurement of static and vibration-induced phase noise in UHF thin-film resonator (TFR) filters.

Measurements of the static phase noise and vibration sensitivity of thin-film resonator (TFR) filters operating at 640 and 2110 MHz have been made. They show that the short-term frequency instability of the filters is small compared with that induced in the oscillator signal by the sustaining stage amplifier PM (phase modulation) noise. In-oscillator measurement of filter performance under vibration indicates that fractional frequency vibration sensitivities (deltafo/fo) are on the order of several parts in 10(-9)/g.

Characterization of chromosome 1 abnormalities in malignant melanomas.

Chromosome 1 abnormalities are the most commonly detected aberrations in many cancers including malignant melanomas. Specific breakpoints are reported for malignant melanomas throughout the chromosome but especially at 1p36 and at several sites throughout 1p22-q21. In addition, partial deletions and loss of heterozygosity have been found on 1p indicating the possible location of tumor suppressor genes.

Synovial sarcoma specific translocation associated with both epithelial and spindle cell components.

The biphasic subtype of synovial sarcoma consists of both epithelial and spindle cell components. To address the relationship between the different cellular components found in synovial sarcoma, we deduced the presence of the synovial sarcoma-specific der(X)t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.

Dual colour fluorescence in situ hybridization to paraffin-embedded samples to deduce the presence of the der(X)t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) and involvement of either the SSX1 or SSX2 gene: a diagnostic and prognostic aid for synovial sarcoma.

Comparative genomic hybridization was used to identify the regions of genomic gain and loss in the myeloid cell line HL-60. These included amplification at 8q24 corresponding to previous reports of overrepresentation of the MYC gene; loss of material from the short arms of chromosomes 9 (9p21-p23), 10, and 17; loss of the chromosome regions 9q32-qter and 14q11-q24; and an extra copy of chromosome 18. Additionally, deletion of the 5q11-q31 region was noted and was associated with translocation of chromosome 5 material to chromosomes 16 and a dic(5;17)(q11;p11) chromosome (previously described as mar 3).

Cytogenetic and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis has been performed on consecutive samples, taken 4 weeks apart, from a phyllodes breast tumor. This revealed the presence of two different chromosome 1 derivatives, namely a dic(1;10)(q10;q24) in the first sample and an i(1) (q10) in the second. In one cell out of 25 from the second sample both derivative chromosomes were seen.

We report the cytogenetic findings in a case of nodular fasciitis of the breast. The abnormalities found in all 11 metaphases available for analysis were -2, -2, -13, der(15)t(2;15)(q31;q26), + der(?) t(?;2), + mar1, + mar2. Other consistent abnormalities were also identified.
