Understanding wildlife reproductive seasonality is crucial for effective management and long-term monitoring of species. This study investigates the seasonal variability of testosterone in male Pacific Coast Feeding Group (PCFG) gray whales, using an eight-year dataset (2016-2023) of individual sightings, drone-based photogrammetry and endocrine analysis of faecal samples. We analyzed the relationship between faecal testosterone levels and total body length (TL), body condition (body area index, BAI), sexual maturity and day of the year using generalized additive mixed models.

: The current gold standards for diagnosing acute kidney injury (AKI) are an increase in serum creatinine and a decrease in urine output, which are inadequate for rapid diagnosis. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a 25-kDa protein produced and secreted by injured kidney tubule epithelial cells, and can serve as an early urinary biomarker for AKI. ProNephro AKI (NGAL) is an immunoassay for the quantitative determination of NGAL in urine (uNGAL) that recently received FDA clearance.

Purpose: Primary care access is a key health system metric, but little research has compared models to provide primary care access when one's regular physician is not available. We compared health system use after a visit with a patient's own family physician group (ie, within-group physician who was not the patient's primary physician) vs a visit with a walk-in clinic physician who was not part of the patient's family physician group.

Methods: We conducted a population-based, retrospective cohort study using administrative data from Ontario, Canada, including all individuals formally enrolled with a family physician, from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • - The systematic review aimed to evaluate how effective point-of-care lung ultrasound is compared to chest X-rays for diagnosing community-acquired pneumonia in children and young adults (0-21 years) in outpatient settings.
  • - The review analyzed six studies involving 1,099 pediatric patients, finding a pooled sensitivity of 90.9% and specificity of 80.7% for lung ultrasound, indicating it’s quite sensitive but less specific.
  • - The authors concluded that while lung ultrasound shows promise for diagnosing pneumonia, further research is needed to address concerns about clinician training, study design, and the reliability of chest radiography as a standard for comparison.

In this work, we describe compatibility assessments of a recombinant, trivalent non-replicating rotavirus vaccine (t-NRRV) candidate with a mock trivalent Sabin inactivated polio vaccine (t-sIPV). Both t-sIPV and t-NRRV are incompatible with thimerosal (TH), a preservative commonly used in pediatric pentavalent combination vaccines (DTwP-Hib-HepB) distributed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), preventing the development of a heptavalent combination. The compatibility of t-NRRV with a mock DTwP-Hib-HepB formulation is described in a companion paper.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare family physicians working in walk-in clinics with those providing long-term care in Ontario, focusing on their characteristics and patient demographics.
  • The research linked a 2019 physician survey with health care data, revealing differences such as a higher percentage of male physicians and a diverse language background among walk-in clinic practitioners.
  • Results showed that walk-in clinic physicians typically served younger, less frequently seeking patients, many of whom were from diverse backgrounds and often attached to other family physicians.

Article Synopsis
  • Some doctors and medical staff need to start asking patients about their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) to give better care, but not everyone is onboard yet.
  • Researchers talked to 20 staff members at a healthcare center to find out how they feel about collecting this kind of information and what problems they see.
  • They found that people are worried about how patients will react, and there are differences in thinking between clinical staff (who work directly with patients) and nonclinical staff (who have different roles), so more education is needed to help everyone understand why gathering this information is important.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate the effects of low-dose oral psilocybin, along with psychological support, on patients suffering from chronic short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks (SUNHA), focusing on cognitive impact, safety, and headache severity.
  • - Participants received ascending doses of psilocybin (5, 7.5, and 10 mg) over three sessions, but recruitment challenges limited the study to four enrolled patients, with only three completing it.
  • - Results indicated no significant adverse effects, but cognitive function data could not be collected due to high subjective dose intensity, and headaches remained severe throughout the trial with minimal observed changes in headache frequency or severity.

Background: Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, presenting symptomatic patients with diminished quality of life and worsening of heart failure. Dofetilide, a class 3 antiarrhythmic agent, is a proven and safe rhythm control medication. Initial risk of QT prolongation leading to torsade de pointes (TdP) necessitates a standard protocol mandating hospitalization for three days for initiation.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) defined by changes in serum creatinine (SCr), or oliguria is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in children who are critically ill. We derived and validated a clinical cutoff value for urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), in a prospective multicenter study of children who were critically ill. We report the clinical performance of urine NGAL (uNGAL) to aid in pediatric AKI risk assessment.

Foraging efficiency is key to animal fitness. Consequently, animals evolved a variety of kinematic, morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations for efficient locomotion to reduce energy expenditure while moving to find, capture, and consume prey. Often suited to specific habitat and prey types, these adaptations correspond to the terrain or substrate the animal moves through.

The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE4) gene is an established risk factor for Alzheimer's disease but its impact on cognition in healthy adults across the lifespan is unclear. One cognitive domain that is affected early in the course of Alzheimer's disease is spatial cognition, yet the evidence for APOE-related changes in spatial cognition is mixed. In this meta-analysis we assessed the impact of carrying the APOE4 allele on five subdomains of spatial cognition across the lifespan.

Changes in body size have been documented across taxa in response to human activities and climate change. Body size influences many aspects of an individual's physiology, behavior, and ecology, ultimately affecting life history performance and resilience to stressors. In this study, we developed an analytical approach to model individual growth patterns using aerial imagery collected via drones, which can be used to investigate shifts in body size in a population and the associated drivers.

In Escherichia coli, the master transcription regulator catabolite repressor activator (Cra) regulates >100 genes in central metabolism. Cra binding to DNA is allosterically regulated by binding to fructose-1-phosphate (F-1-P), but the only documented source of F-1-P is from the concurrent import and phosphorylation of exogenous fructose. Thus, many have proposed that fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (F-1,6-BP) is also a physiological regulatory ligand.

Refugees and asylum seekers who identify as sexual minorities and/or who have been persecuted for same-sex acts maneuver through multiple oppressive systems at all stages of migration. Sexual minority refugees and asylum seekers (SM RAS) report experiencing a greater number of persecutory experiences and worse mental health symptoms than refugees and asylum seekers persecuted for reasons other than their sexual orientation (non-SM RAS). SM RAS are growing in numbers, report a need and desire for mental health treatment, and are often referred to therapy during the asylum process.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the most common preventable form of developmental and neurobehavioral disability. Animal models have demonstrated that even low to moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is sufficient to impair behavioral flexibility in multiple domains. Previously, utilizing a moderate limited access drinking in the dark paradigm, we have shown that PAE 1) impairs touchscreen pairwise visual reversal in male adult offspring 2) leads to small but significant decreases in orbitofrontal (OFC) firing rates 3) significantly increases dorsal striatum (dS) activity and 4) aberrantly sustains OFC-dS synchrony across early reversal.

California leads the nation with its relatively low rate of maternal deaths during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, individuals insured via Medi-Cal suffer a disproportionate share of maternal deaths and severe complications at birth; within this group of publicly insured individuals, certain racial and/or ethnic groups have even higher rates of poor outcomes. The state can attribute part of its success in lowering rates of maternal mortality (MM) to the implementation of a data-driven statewide portfolio of quality improvement activities focused on the leading causes of maternal death.
