Coral cover and rubble cryptofauna abundance and diversity at outplanted reefs in Okinawa, Japan.

Global climate change is leading to damage and loss of coral reef ecosystems. On subtropical Okinawa Island in southwestern Japan, the prefectural government is working on coral reef restoration by outplanting coral colonies from family Acroporidae back to reefs after initially farming colonies inside protected nurseries. In order to establish a baseline for future comparisons, in this study we documented the current status of reefs undergoing outplanting at Okinawa Island, and nearby locations where no human manipulation has occurred.

Severe prolonged neutropenia following administration of tocilizumab in a patient affected by COVID-19: a case report and brief review of the literature.

Tocilizumab is one of the newest therapeutic options for the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by the recently discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) β-coronavirus. Several trials are currently ongoing to assess the efficacy and safety profile of tocilizumab in treating ARDS. In this article, we present the case of a Black patient with acute pneumonia who benefited greatly from tocilizumab, but developed severe prolonged neutropenia.

Environmental DNA can act as a biodiversity barometer of anthropogenic pressures in coastal ecosystems.

Loss of biodiversity from lower to upper trophic levels reduces overall productivity and stability of coastal ecosystems in our oceans, but rarely are these changes documented across both time and space. The characterisation of environmental DNA (eDNA) from sediment and seawater using metabarcoding offers a powerful molecular lens to observe marine biota and provides a series of 'snapshots' across a broad spectrum of eukaryotic organisms. Using these next-generation tools and downstream analytical innovations including machine learning sequence assignment algorithms and co-occurrence network analyses, we examined how anthropogenic pressures may have impacted marine biodiversity on subtropical coral reefs in Okinawa, Japan.

Update on the safety and efficacy of teriparatide in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Following the completion of the Fracture Prevention Trial, teriparatide was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicine Agency as the first therapeutic anabolic agent for the treatment of postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis. It subsequently received additional approval for the treatment of osteoporosis in men, and for the treatment of osteoporosis associated with glucocorticoid therapy in men and women at risk of fracture. In this review, we summarize the most important data concerning PTH 1-34 therapy before 2016 in the treatment of osteoporosis, and report some outstanding results published in the last 2 years.

Investigating subtle kidney injury in primary hyperparathyroidism by means of sensitive and specific biomarkers.

Objective: Kidney involvement is a common complication in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). No study so far has assessed the prevalence of kidney injury developing before the reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in PHPT. The study was aimed at establishing the potential role of biomarkers of kidney injury in detecting subtle renal damage in patients with PHPT.

Marine biodiversity research in the Ryukyu Islands, Japan: current status and trends.

Marine biodiversity and derived ecosystem services are critical to the healthy functioning of marine ecosystems, and to human economic and societal well-being. Thus, an understanding of marine biodiversity in different ecosystems is necessary for their conservation and management. Coral reefs in particular are noted for their high levels of biodiversity, and among the world's coral reefs, the subtropical Ryukyu Islands (RYS; also known as the Nansei Islands) in Japan have been shown to harbor very high levels of marine biodiversity.

Digging for DNA at depth: rapid universal metabarcoding surveys (RUMS) as a tool to detect coral reef biodiversity across a depth gradient.

Background: Effective biodiversity monitoring is fundamental in tracking changes in ecosystems as it relates to commercial, recreational, and conservation interests. Current approaches to survey coral reef ecosystems center on the use of indicator species and repeat surveying at specific sites. However, such approaches are often limited by the narrow snapshot of total marine biodiversity that they describe and are thus hindered in their ability to contribute to holistic ecosystem-based monitoring.

In this study, three new species of macrocnemic zoantharians (Hexacorallia, Zoantharia) are described from localities in the Indo-Pacific Ocean including the Red Sea, the Maldives, Palau, and southern Japan: , , and Although the genus is currently restricted to species living on antipatharians, is not associated with any living substrate and instead is found on coral reef carbonate substrate within narrow caves or cracks. The two new species that have association with antipatharians, and , can be distinguished by their relative coenenchyme development and the antipatharian species that each uses as substrate. Additionally, all new species described in this study have unique nuclear internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (ITS-rDNA) sequences.

Vitamin D supplementation represents an important topic in the field of metabolic bone disease. Calcidiol, the 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D], is the form of vitamin D most recently introduced in clinical practice. Advantages of the use of calcidiol derive from the pharmacokinetic properties and are related to the possibility of use in patients with liver disease, obese patients, patients with intestinal malabsorption, secondary hyperparathyroidism associated with chronic kidney disease as well as to avoid any possible toxic effect when high doses are used.

Correction of vitamin D status by calcidiol: pharmacokinetic profile, safety, and biochemical effects on bone and mineral metabolism of daily and weekly dosage regimens.

Rationale: Calcidiol can be employed to correct vitamin D deficiency.

Main Results: Calcidiol administered at daily and weekly regimens over a period of 3 months was able to successfully raise 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels without altering other markers related to bone and mineral metabolism.

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare endocrine disorder, but few studies have focused on the epidemiology and hospital management of the disease and none has been performed in Italy. We investigated the prevalence of different forms of hypoparathyroidism among hospitalized patients in Italy during an 8-year period. This study is designed as a retrospective register-based study.

An oral high dose of cholecalciferol restores vitamin D status in deficient postmenopausal HIV-1-infected women independently of protease inhibitors therapy: a pilot study.

Context: The fourth International Workshop on the Management of Asymptomatic Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has recently suggested that skeletal and renal imaging be routinely conducted. So far, no study has systematically assessed this issue.

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the prevalence of kidney stones (KS) and vertebral fractures (VFs) in a cohort of patients with PHPT utilizing noninvasive imaging technology.

Improved determination of malonaldehyde by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection as 2,3-diaminonaphthalene derivative.

A rapid, specific and simple procedure is proposed for the determination of free malonaldehyde (MA) contained in fish tissue. The method is the optimization of the reaction of MA with 2,3-diaminonaphthalene to afford a naphtodiazepinium ion that present a UV absorption at 311nm, useful for MA determination by HPLC with UV detection. The reaction proceeds in the presence of 25% acetonitrile at 37°C in 20min at pH 2 using 2,4-pentanedione as internal standard.

Effect of risedronate in osteoporotic HIV males, according to gonadal status: a pilot study.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of risedronate on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers in HIV-infected osteoporotic males, according to their gonadal status. HIV patients were followed up for 24 months and divided into two groups: patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia with fractures (group A, n = 20) and those without (group B, n = 21). Group A and B were further divided according to the presence of reduced androgenizations.

Vitamin D supplementation: when and how?

The multiple effects of vitamin D on skeletal and extra-skeletal tissues increased the attention of scientists and public to the possible relationship between hypovitaminosis D and a variety of acute and chronic diseases. However, several points are still largely debated. In particular, the definition of optimal vitamin D status [as assessed by the circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D)] remains controversial, and experts still disagree about several related outcomes: how to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, when to start treatment, how to reach optimal 25(OH)D levels, which type of vitamin is preferable for supplementation, which dosing strategy is the better option.

A headspace solid-phase microextraction gas-chromatographic mass-spectrometric method (HS-SPME-GC/MS) to quantify hexanal in butter during storage as marker of lipid oxidation.

A method using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed and validated for the extraction and quantification of hexanal content in butter (at ngg(-1) level) during storage at 4°C. The variability of hexanal content among seasons of production and the influence of high extraction temperature on ex-novo formation of hexanal were also evaluated. The HS-SPME conditions were optimised and analytical parameters of the method (linearity, accuracy, and precision) demonstrate its usefulness.
