Oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions - challenges and pitfalls for the general dental practitioner.

Lichen planus is a chronic, mucocutaneous inflammatory condition which, due to its prevalence, will be familiar to the dental profession. However, diverse forms of presentation, important differential diagnosis, potential malignant change and monitoring requirements often result in challenges for those in primary care. This paper looks to examine these challenges and provide information to support those who are involved in recognition and management of patients with lichen planus.

Impact of ferric carboxymaltose for iron deficiency at discharge after heart failure hospitalization: a European multinational economic evaluation.

Aims: Iron deficiency (ID) is comorbid in up to 50% patients with heart failure (HF) and exacerbates disease burden. Ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) reduced HF hospitalizations and improved quality of life when used to treat ID at discharge in patients hospitalized for acute HF with left ventricular ejection fraction <50% in the AFFIRM-AHF trial. We quantified the effect of FCM on burden of disease and the wider pharmacoeconomic implications in France, Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

The implementation of a flipped classroom approach at a UK dental school.

Introduction The flipped classroom (FC) format involves the student reviewing the theoretical subject matter through material provided prior to a face-to-face teaching session. The intention is that because the student is familiar with the material, they will derive more from the tutor contact time. This format has been shown to increase student satisfaction, performance and cognitive development, and delivers better academic attainment.

Relationships among manure nitrogen output and dietary and animal factors in lactating dairy cows.

A large data set derived from total diet digestibility assessments on lactating dairy cows (535 Holstein-Friesian and 29 Norwegian) was used to examine effects of dietary and animal factors on manure (feces and urine) nitrogen (N) output and to develop mitigation strategies and prediction equations for manure N output in lactating dairy cows. Manure N output was positively and significantly related to live weight, milk yield, dietary crude protein (CP) concentration, dry matter intake, and N intake. Reducing the dietary CP concentration or increasing the milk yield decreased manure N output per kilogram of milk yield.

Efficacy of oral dexamethasone in outpatients with acute bronchiolitis.

Objective: To examine the efficacy of oral dexamethasone in acute bronchiolitis.

Study Design: A double-blind randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 70 children < 24 months old in the emergency department with Respiratory Disease Assessment Instrument > or = 6. Each patient received either 1 dose of 1 mg/kg of oral dexamethasone or placebo and was assessed hourly for a 4-hour period.

The proteins encoded by the rbs operon of Escherichia coli: II. Use of chimeric protein constructs to isolate and characterize RbsC.

Chimeric genes encoding full-length copies of rbsA and rbsC connected by segments coding for short bridge peptides were constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli. Surprisingly, the chimeric genes complemented the strain in which rbsA and rbsC were deleted. The chimeric proteins were overproduced, and the products were purified by affinity chromatography.

Probing protein-protein interactions. The ribose-binding protein in bacterial transport and chemotaxis.

A number of mutations at Gly134 of the periplasmic ribose-binding protein of Escherichia coli were examined by a combined biochemical and structural approach. Different mutations gave rise to different patterns of effects on the chemotaxis and transport functions. The smallest residue (alanine) had the least effect on transport, whereas large hydrophobic residues had the smallest effect on chemotaxis.

Identical mutations at corresponding positions in two homologous proteins with nonidentical effects.

The x-ray structure of a mutant (Gly72 to Asp) of the Escherichia coli ribose-binding protein with altered transport function has been solved and refined to 2.2-A resolution with a conventional R-factor (R-factor = [formula: see text]) of 16.0% and good stereochemistry.

Functional mapping of the surface of Escherichia coli ribose-binding protein: mutations that affect chemotaxis and transport.

Ribose-binding protein is a bifunctional soluble receptor found in the periplasm of Escherichia coli. Interaction of liganded binding protein with the ribose high affinity transport complex results in the transfer of ribose across the cytoplasmic membrane. Alternatively, interaction of liganded binding protein with a chemotactic signal transducer, Trg, initiates taxis toward ribose.
