Submergence stress tolerance is a complex trait governed by multiple loci. Because of its wide distribution across arid and humid regions, Arabidopsis thaliana offers an opportunity to explore the genetic components and their action mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to submergence stress. In this study, using map-based cloning we identified WRKY22 that activates RAP2.

Bioinformatics scrutiny unveiled that OsASMT1 is situated on chromosome 9. Its protein architecture, comprising dimerization and methyltransferase domains, showed significant similarities to OsASMT2 and OsASMT3.

Methods: In this study, the functions of 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid reductase 1 (OsOPR1) were predicted through bioinformatics analysis.
Background: As one of the major food crops in the world, rice is vulnerable to cadmium (Cd) pollution. Understanding of the molecular mechanisms of Cd uptake, transport and detoxification in rice is essential for the breeding of low-Cd rice. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the response of rice to Cd stress remains to be further clarified.

As a toxic heavy metal, cadmium (Cd) is one of the principal pollutants influencing rice productivity and food security. Despite several studies, the underlying mechanism of Cd response in plants remains largely unclear. Dehydrins are part of the late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) family which protect plants against abiotic stresses.

Therefore, we used comprehensive molecular genetics, plant biotechnology, and functional omics approaches, including phenotyping, mapping-by-sequencing, target gene seed-specific RNAi, transgenic experiments, and transcriptomic profiling to answer this biological and molecular question. Here, we report the characterization of the 'Oat-like rice' mutant, with poor grain quality, including chalky endosperms, abnormal morphology and loose arrangement of starch granules, and lower starch content but higher protein content in grains.

Although many grain shape-related genes have been reported, the regulatory relationship between them has not been well characterized in rice. In this study, we report the isolation of a short-grain-length mutant called sg5 from the heavy-panicle-type hybrid rice elite restorer line 'ShuhuiR498' (R498) after ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) treatment.

Here, we show that leaf-derived ABA controls rice seed development in a temperature-dependent manner and is regulated by defective grain-filling 1 (DG1), a multidrug and toxic compound extrusion transporter that effluxes ABA at nodes and rachilla. Specifically, ABA is biosynthesized in both WT and leaves, but only WT caryopses accumulate leaf-derived ABA.

Here, we have isolated and identified a spontaneous rice mutant named yd1 that has yellowish leaves and dwarf stature. Map-based cloning reveals that YD1 encodes a previously reported kinesin protein from the kinesin-4 subfamily, BC12/GDD1.

Many genes that affect grain appearance quality have been identified, but the regulatory mechanisms that contribute to this trait remain unclear. Here, two grains with chalkiness (gwc1) mutants, gwc1-1 and gwc1-2, were identified from an EMS-mutagenized population of indica rice cultivar Shuhui498 (R498).

Field and pot trials were conducted in 2014-2016, including a N-labeled urea pot experiment (2014) to investigate mechanism by which optimized nitrogen fertilizer application (OFA) increases nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe yield-increasing mechanism of an optimized nitrogen fertilizer application (OFA) in rice was reported in this work through a three-year test. Results showed that the number of branches and spikelets increased, panicle length, the diameter and vascular bundle number of panicle-neck internode improved with OFA. Under the condition of OFA, high effective leaf areas, especially for the flag and the second upper leaf areas, increased, the net photosynthetic rate of the upper three leaves promoted, so the photosynthetic productivity went up by a large margin; moreover, the content of soluble protein and chlorophyll of leaf also increased, and the content of soluble sugar and malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased, as a result in slowing down the senescence speed in leaves, and increasing the photosynthetic time.

Telemetry devices were attached to 67 wintering wild geese of five different species at three important wetlands in the Yangtze River Floodplain (YRF), China to determine habitat use. 50 individuals of three declining species were almost entirely diurnally confined to natural wetlands; 17 individuals from two species showing stable trends used wetlands 83% and 90% of the time, otherwise resorting to farmland.

Tracheary elements (TEs) are tissues responsible for the transport of water and minerals and characterized by patterned secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening. Exocysts are involved in the regulation of SCW deposition by mediating the targeted transport of materials and enzymes to specific membrane areas.
