Mixed non-motorized traffic is largely unaffected by motor vehicle congestion, offering high accessibility and convenience, and thus serving as a primary mode of "last-mile" transportation in urban areas. To advance stochastic capacity estimation methods and provide reliable assessments of non-motorized roadway capacity, this study proposes a stochastic capacity estimation model based on power spectral analysis. The model treats discrete traffic flow data as a time-series signal and employs a stochastic signal parameter model to fit stochastic traffic flow patterns.

Background/purpose: Mesenchymal stem cells exhibit therapeutic efficacy for brain injury. This study examined the effect of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) on alleviating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD).

Materials And Methods: SHED were isolated to examine the biosafety and bioavailability of stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth-derived conditioned medium (SHED-CM) for the alleviation of PD symptoms in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD zebrafish model.

The development of immunotherapies for nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) has lagged far behind that for melanoma in the past few decades, given that the majority of cases are surgically curable. Nevertheless, given the steady growth in the incidence rate of NMSC and attendant increase in patients with unresectable or advanced-stage tumors, the demand for systemic therapy is noticeably increasing. To date, the most widely used immunotherapeutic strategies, including immune checkpoint inhibitors and T-cell therapy, have obtained satisfactory results in some patients but not others.

Introduction: Red blood cell (RBC) storage solution is used for suspending and preserving RBCs for later use in immunohematology testing. Proper RBC preservation is crucial for obtaining accurate results in RBC phenotyping and pretransfusion antibody screening tests. Haemolysis or RBC antigen degradation during storage can result in inaccurate RBC phenotyping, thereby decreasing the sensitivity of pretransfusion antibody screening and identification assays.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) involves the abnormal activity of transition metals and metal ion dyshomeostasis; however, the potential of trace metal biomarkers in predicting cognitive decline has not been evaluated. This study aimed to assess the potential of 36 trace elements in predicting cognitive decline in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) or AD. Participants (9 controls, 23 aMCI due to AD, and 8 AD dementia) underwent comprehensive cognitive tests, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and trace metal analysis.

Since the late 2020, the evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern has been characterized by the emergence of spike protein mutations, and these variants have become dominant worldwide. The gold standard SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis protocol requires two complex processes, namely, RNA extraction and real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). There is a need for a faster, simpler, and more cost-effective detection strategy that can be utilized worldwide, especially in developing countries.

Therapeutic phlebotomy, known as scheduled bloodletting, has been the main method for managing erythrocytosis symptoms and thrombocytosis-associated complications in various blood disorders. One of the major indications for phlebotomy is polycythemia vera (PV). The main goal of current treatment strategies for patients who require phlebotomy is to prevent thrombohemorrhagic complications rather than to prolong survival or lessen the risk of myelofibrotic or leukemic progression.

Background: Although several epigenetic drugs have been reported to have therapeutic efficacy for some hematologic neoplasms (HNs) in clinical trials, few achieved disease-free survival benefit. The traditional drug discovery pathway is costly and time-consuming, and thus, more effective strategies are required. We attempted to facilitate epigenetic drug repositioning for therapy of HNs by screening the Human Epigenetic Drug Database (HEDD) in the web, conducting a bench-work cytotoxicity test and a retrospective nationwide cohort study prior to a clinical trial.

The combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy improves the survival rate of patients with malignancies developed through escape from T-cell-mediated immune surveillance. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as anti-programmed cell death protein-ligand 1 (anti-PD-L1) antibody, are used to rescue exhausted T cells. Simultaneously, dendritic cells (DCs) which are antigen-presenting cells that can initiate T-cell activation, are used to induce a tumor-specific immune response.

In Taiwan, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer and the cancer with the third highest mortality rate. This may be because of the difficulty of detecting the disease in the early stages, as well as the fact that colonoscopy, a typical method used in screening for CRC, causes discomfort to the recipient and is prone to technical interference. For the earlier detection of CRC, finding an easier screening method with a simpler collection procedure is essential.

The pigment melanin is produced by melanocytes, is primarily responsible for skin color, and protects it against ultraviolet rays that can cause the destruction of genetic material within the keratinocytes. To elucidate the mechanisms of many diseases associated with melanocytes, such as melanoma and albinism, or burns with uneven pigment distribution, the disease model needs to be established first. In this study, we aimed to construct the melanocyte model from patients in a short period.

Kodamaea (Pichia) ohmeri was formerly considered a contaminant, but is now known to be a significant human pathogen that has been shown to cause fungemia, endocarditis, funguria, and peritonitis in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of fungemia caused by K. ohmeri in a 71-year-old man with cellulitis.

Background And Purpose: In order to reduce the turnaround time for laboratory diagnosis of bacteremia, the efficacy of identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing using samples taken directly from positive BacT/ALERT standard aerobic and standard anaerobic blood culture bottles was evaluated.

Methods: 160 positive blood culture bottles were examined and incubated at 35 degrees C in 5% carbon dioxide for 4-24 h, and an aliquot of the culture fluid was Gram stained. Samples containing Gram-negative bacilli were inoculated on VITEK 2 ID-GNB (identification-Gram-negative bacilli) and AST (antimicrobial susceptibility testing)-GN04 cards, and those containing Gram-positive cocci were inoculated on ID-GPC (identification-Gram-positive cocci) and AST-P526 cards.
