Phytochemical investigation on the rhizomes and roots of Gentiana scabra (Gentianaceae) led to the isolation of five new triterpenoids (1-5), together with seven known ones (6-12). The structures and absolute configurations of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic data interpretation, ECD calculation and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Noticeably, compound 4 was an uncommon 3,4-seco-pentacyclic triterpenoid in natural products.

Article Synopsis
  • Sesquiterpene dimers are primarily found in the Asteraceae family, but there are inconsistencies in their reported structures.
  • The study describes ten dimers sourced from certain flowers, including important configurational revisions for several known compounds.
  • Additionally, five new metabolites were identified, and some of these compounds showed inhibition of nitric oxide production in activated macrophages at varying concentrations.

Seven undescribed benzoate glycosides (1-7) and five known ones (8-12) were isolated from the rhizomes of Gentiana scabra Bge. Their structures were characterized by comprehensive NMR and MS spectroscopic data analysis. The lipid-lowering effects of these compounds were evaluated by measuring the triglyceride (TG) contents and intracellular lipid droplets (LDs) in oleic acid (OA)-treated HepG2 cells.

Two new chroman-4-ones penicichromanone A () and penicichromanone B (), together with three known compounds conioxepinol C (), emodin () and moniliphenone (), were obtained from the endophytic fungus , which was isolated from the bark of Oliver. The structures of and were elucidated by detailed analysis of HRESIMS, 1D/2D NMR and ECD spectra. All the compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activities using HEK293 cells, and compounds , , and exhibited significant inhibitory effects on TNF--stimulated NF-κB activation.
