Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation are associated with many diseases. Lots of studies focus on the detection of intracellular ROS by small fluorescent molecules. However, ROS recognized by biocompatible nanoparticles are relatively less reported.

Among various factors, surface ligands play critical roles. Previous studies usually employed QDs with different kinds of surface ligands, but general principles were difficult to be obtained since it was hard to compare these surface ligands with varied chemical structures without common features.

In this work, the binding characteristics and molecular mechanism of the interaction between the BH and herring sperm DNA were explored by UV-vis absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy. In the mechanism discussion, fluorescence quenching, absorption spectra, competition experiment, and iodide quenching experiment studies hinted at an intercalative mode of binding for BH to DNA.
