Article Synopsis
  • A study focused on early identification of patients at high risk for operative mortality from acute type A aortic dissection (TAAD) explored the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory treatments based on different risk levels.
  • Researchers created a risk model using data from over 3,000 patients, which included important health markers that accurately predicted the likelihood of mortality post-surgery, achieving strong predictive validity.
  • Although the anti-inflammatory drug ulinastatin did not reduce overall operative mortality risk, its use was linked to shorter mechanical ventilation times in higher-risk patients, suggesting it could help improve post-operative recovery.

Objective: Cabrol shunt has been introduced for surgical repair of type A aortic dissection (TAAD) without robust evidence supporting its routine preventive use.

Methods: Adult patients with TAAD from China 5A study were included if surgically repaired between 2016 and 2022. Primary outcome was operative mortality according to Society of Thoracic Surgeons criterion.

Background: Little is known regarding whether hyperoxic reoxygenation was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disorder following tetralogy of Fallot repair.

Methods: We performed a nested case-control study among patients aged 1 month-18 years undergoing complete repair of tetralogy of Fallot in 2012-2018. We measured the highest perfusate oxygenation (PpO2) during aortic occlusion in 107 cardiovascular disorder cases and in 321 controls matched 1:3 to the cases on date of surgery, sex, and area of residence.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on the delayed diagnosis of endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB) and the need for rapid diagnostic methods, specifically evaluating the GeneXpert MTB/RIF system recommended by the WHO.* -
  • Researchers analyzed biopsy tissues and bronchial brushings from EBTB patients, comparing GeneXpert MTB/RIF's effectiveness against traditional diagnostic methods like sputum smears and cultures.* -
  • Findings showed that GeneXpert MTB/RIF demonstrated superior sensitivity and a 100% specificity, enhancing timely diagnosis of EBTB and identification of rifampin resistance in a significant portion of cases.*

HfS is one of the emerging transition metal dichalcogenides and is very promising for low-power nanoelectronics and high-sensitivity optoelectronic device applications. We studied the band structures of 1T-HfS with different thicknesses by first principles simulation, and the impact of different metal contacts to the HfS device performance has been experimentally studied. Back-gate and top-gate HfS field-effect transistors (FETs) were fabricated, and better electrical characteristics have been achieved with the FETs with the Ti/Au contact as compared with the Pt-contacted FETs.
