Successful management of 3 dogs with colonic pythiosis using itraconzaole, terbinafine, and prednisone.

Gastrointestinal (GI) pythiosis is a severe and often fatal disease in dogs that traditionally has been poorly responsive to medical treatment. Although aggressive surgical resection with wide margins is the most consistently effective treatment, lesion location and extent often preclude complete resection. Recently, it has been suggested that the addition of anti-inflammatory doses of corticosteroids may improve outcome in dogs with nonresectable GI pythiosis.

Looks can deceive: molecular identity of an intraerythrocytic apicomplexan parasite in Australian gliders.

Two yellow-bellied gliders (Petaurus australis) had an intraerythrocytic parasite closely related to the cyst-forming coccidia (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae). The parasitaemia persisted for 3 months or more but was observed to clear within 3 years in captivity. The parasite appears not to significantly debilitate its infected host.

Design and synthesis of factor Xa inhibitors and their prodrugs.

In addition to our previously reported fluoro acrylamides Xa inhibitors 2 and 3, a series of potent and novel cyclic diimide amidine compounds has been identified. In efforts to improve their oral bioavailability, replacement of the amidine group with methyl amidrazone gives compounds of moderate potency (14, IC(50)=0.028 microM).
