The phosphorylation of the tight-junction protein claudin causes allosterism, endocytosis and changes in the polarity of the epithelium, thus affecting the barrier function. The phosphorylation status of claudin during the course of colitis has not been demonstrated. In the present study, we found that the phosphorylated claudin-4 and claudin-7 contents were increased in experimental colitis at days 6 and 8, and colonic phosphorylated claudin-6 was found to be increased at day 4 and day 8.

This study examined the possibility that pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS) or tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) inhibits the excitatory pathway from the pontine micturition center (PMC) to the urinary bladder. In decerebrate cats under α-chloralose anesthesia, electrical stimulation of the PMC (40 Hz frequency, 0.2-ms pulse width, 10-25 s duration) using a microelectrode induced bladder contractions >20 cmH2O amplitude when the bladder was filled to 60-70% capacity.

We designed, fabricated, and characterized broadband, efficient, all-dielectric metamaterial-waveguide bends (MWBs) that redirect light by 180 deg. The footprint of each MWB is 3  μm×3  μm and redirection is achieved for single-mode waveguides spaced by 1.3 μm, which corresponds to an effective bend radius of 0.

This is the first study to investigate the effect of macropores on the transport of CeO2 nanoparticles (nCeO2) in quartz sand and soil. The artificial macropore types are the vertical continuous macropore (O-O), and the vertical discontinuous macropore (O-C). The results indicated that the mobility of nCeO2 was significantly enhanced by the macropore in both quartz sand and soil, and the enhancement was greater in the continuous macropore than in the discontinuous macropore.

The oncoprotein EZH2, as a histone H3K27 methyltransferase, is frequently overexpressed in various cancer types. However, the mechanisms underlying its role in urinary bladder cancer (UBC) cells have not yet fully understood. Herein, we reported that honokiol, a biologically active biphenolic compound isolated from the Magnolia officinalis inhibited human UBC cell proliferation, survival, cancer stemness, migration, and invasion, through downregulation of EZH2 expression level, along with the reductions of MMP9, CD44, Sox2 and the induction of tumor suppressor miR-143.

Aristolochic acid (AA) is a carcinogenic, mutagenic and nephrotoxic compound commonly isolated from members of the plant family of Aristolochiaceae (such as Aristolochia and Asarum) and used in Chinese herbal medicine. Use of AA and AA‑containing plants causes chronic kidney disease (CKD) and upper urinary tract carcinoma (UUC); however, the underlying mechanism remains to be defined. miRNAs regulate a number of biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation and metabolism.

We demonstrate broadband asymmetric transmission or optical-diode behavior via a digital metasurface, that is, a surface that is digitally patterned at subwavelength dimensions. Enhanced light-matter interactions at the interfaces of the metasurface break the symmetry in the propagation direction, and enables high light-transmission in one direction, while strongly reflecting the light in the opposite direction. We measured a peak extinction ratio of 11.

Background/aims: Vasoconstrictor-induced rhythmic contraction of arteries or veins has been observed both in vivo and in vitro. Many studies have reported that gap junctions, ryanodine receptors, Na+, K+-ATPase and other factors are involved in vasoconstrictor-induced rhythmic contraction in vascular smooth muscle. However, the mechanism is still not completely understood.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing in Han Chinese individuals. Several studies have demonstrated that polymorphisms of the PARVB gene may play crucial roles in the development of NAFLD. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the association of rs5764455 and rs6006473 polymorphisms in PARVB with the Han Chinese population's susceptibility to NAFLD.

Background/aims: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess immunomodulatory properties on a diverse array of immune cell lineages, including regulatory T and B cells (Tregs and Bregs, respectively). However, their specific effects and mechanisms underlying induction of Bregs remain unclear. The immune regulatory function of MSCs is exerted through both cell-cell contact and the release of soluble factors.

Urinary bladder cancer (UBC) patients at muscle invasive stage have poor clinical outcome, due to high propensity for metastasis. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), one of the principal constituents of the tumor stroma, play an important role in tumor development. However, it is unclear whether CAFs from UBC induce cell invasion and which signaling pathway is involved.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how glycinergic transmission affects both painful and non-painful bladder reflexes, and how these reflexes can be inhibited by pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS).
  • Using anesthetized cats, researchers performed tests to measure bladder responses to saline and acetic acid, while also administering strychnine to block glycine receptors and observing its effects on bladder capacity and reflex inhibition.
  • Results showed that glycine plays a significant role in enhancing non-nociceptive bladder reflexes, while its role in inhibiting nociceptive reflexes is more limited; specifically, blocking glycine reduced the effectiveness of PNS during painful bladder stimulation.

We applied nonlinear optimization to design integrated digital metamaterials in silicon for unidirectional energy flow. Two devices, one for each polarization state, were designed, fabricated, and characterized. Both devices offer comparable or higher transmission efficiencies and extinction ratios, are easier to fabricate, exhibit larger bandwidths and are more tolerant to fabrication errors, when compared to alternatives.

FeSe superconductors and their related systems have attracted much attention in the study of iron-based superconductors owing to their simple crystal structure and peculiar electronic and physical properties. The bulk FeSe superconductor has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ~8 K and it can be dramatically enhanced to 37 K at high pressure. On the other hand, its cousin system, FeTe, possesses a unique antiferromagnetic ground state but is non-superconducting.

Mechanical forces exerted on cells impose stress on the plasma membrane. Cells sense this stress and elicit a mechanoelectric transduction cascade that initiates compensatory mechanisms. Mechanosensitive ion channels in the plasma membrane are responsible for transducing the mechanical signals to electrical signals.

This study examined the role of spinal metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) in the nociceptive C-fiber afferent-mediated spinal bladder reflex and in the inhibtion of this reflex by pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS). In α-chloralose-anesthetized cats after spinal cord transection at the T9/T10 level, intravesical infusion of 0.25% acetic acid irritated the bladder, activated nociceptive C-fiber afferents, and induced spinal reflex bladder contractions of low amplitude (<50 cmH2O) and short duration (<20 s) at a smaller bladder capacity ∼80% of saline control capacity.

We utilized nonlinear optimization to design phase-only diffractive lenses that focus light to a spot, whose width is smaller than that dictated by the far-field diffraction limit. Although scalar-diffraction theory was utilized for the design, careful comparisons against rigorous finite-difference time-domain simulations confirm the superfocusing effect. We were able to design a lens with a focal spot size that is 25% smaller than that formed by a conventional lens of the same numerical aperture.

Fenofibrate (FF) is widely used to lower blood lipids in clinical practice, but whether its protective effect on endothelium-dependent vasodilatation (EDV) in thoracic aorta is related with endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress remains unknown. In this study, female Sprauge Dawley rats were divided into standard chow diets (SCD), high-fat diets (HFD) and HFD plus FF treatment group (HFD + FF) randomly. The rats of latter two groups were given HFD feeding for 5 months, then HFD + FF rats were treated with FF (30 mg/kg, once daily) via gavage for another 2 months.
