Objectives: We previously reported that CCL17 gene-deficient mice are protected from developing pain-like behaviour and exhibit less disease in destabilization of medial meniscus (DMM)-induced OA, as well as in high-fat diet (HFD)-exacerbated DMM-induced OA. Here, we explored if therapeutic neutralization of CCL17, using increasing doses of a neutralizing monoclonal antibody (mAb), would lead to a dose-dependent benefit in these two models.

Design: DMM-induced OA was initiated in male mice either fed with a control diet (7% fat) or 8 weeks of a 60% HFD, followed by therapeutic intraperitoneal administration (i.

Tidal flats provide critical habitat for migratory waterbird species; however, populations of migratory waterbirds have significantly declined due to tidal flat loss and degradation caused by human activities, particularly in Asia. Gochang getbol is one of tidal flats located on the southwest coast of South Korea and a center of clam production. Using bird monitoring data collected at five zones (zone1 to zone5) established across Gochang getbol and near coastal area, we examined distribution patterns of migratory bird diversity and conservation-related species along the coast of Gochang getbol.

When free-ranging birds are accidentally killed or die, there may be greater potential for their associated ticks to detach, seek alternate hosts, and become established. We examined 711 carcasses of 95 avian species for ticks at a stopover island of migratory birds in the Republic of Korea where only Ixodes nipponensis and I. persulcatus were previously reported from local mammals and vegetation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with a high prevalence, approximately 1 % in the elderly population. Numerous studies have demonstrated that methamphetamine (MA) intoxication caused the neurological deficits and nigrostriatal damage seen in Parkinsonian conditions, and subsequent rodent studies have found that neurotoxic binge administration of MA reproduced PD-like features, in terms of its symptomatology and pathology. Several anti-Parkinsonian medications have been shown to attenuate the motor impairments and dopaminergic damage induced by MA.

We suggested that selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GPx) plays a protective role against methamphetamine (MA)-induced dopaminergic toxicity. We focused on GPx-1, a major selenium-dependent enzyme and constructed a GPx-1 gene-encoded adenoviral vector (Ad-GPx-1) to delineate the role of GPx-1 in MA-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity. Exposure to Ad-GPx-1 significantly induced GPx activity and GPx-1 protein levels in GPx-1-knockout (GPx-1-KO) mice.

We previously demonstrated that activation of protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ) is critical for methamphetamine (MA)-induced dopaminergic toxicity. It was recognized that microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH) also induces dopaminergic neurotoxicity. It was demonstrated that inhibition of PKC modulates the expression of mEH.

The emergence of drug resistance and limitation of antifungal agents complicate the management of fungal infection. Candida albicans, as the most common fungal infection pathogen, causes candidiasis via developing its virulence factors. In this study, we found trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), known as a "Generally Regarded As Safe" (GRAS) molecule, had moderate antifungal activities against various Candida species and could retard the virulence of C.

Background: Hirudin, an extract from Hirudo spp., is an anticoagulant used to treat a variety of renal diseases, including diabetic nephropathy (DN). Currently, hirudin has to be used at high dosages to treat DN because it poorly targets the kidneys, although at high dosages it can have severe side effects.

Previously we demonstrated that p53 mediates dopaminergic neurotoxicity via inducing mitochondrial burdens and proapoptotsis. However, little is known about the role of p53 in the excitotoxicity induced by psychostimulant, such as cocaine. Cocaine-induced kindling (convulsive) behaviors significantly increased p53 expression in the brain.

During 2012-2017, we collected throat swabs from dogs in China to characterize canine influenza virus (CIV) A(H3N2) isolates. A new antigenically and genetically distinct CIV H3N2 clade possessing mutations associated with mammalian adaptation emerged in 2016 and replaced previously circulating strains. This clade probably poses a risk for zoonotic infection.

Information on sexual dimorphism helps explain a species' evolution in sexual selection and conservation issues such as sex-specific response in environmental changes. The Barn Swallow () is a well-known sexually dimorphic species in which males have longer tail streamers than females. However, when compared with the European-African or American subspecies, little information is available on morphological sex determination in the East Asian subspecies , especially outside the breeding season, when opportunities for molecular sexing are often limited and morphological clues may be the only ones available for sex determination.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) may weaken the immune defenses of children, making them vulnerable to opportunistic bacterial infection. CPF combined with bacterial infection is a potential problem for children during their childhood development. However, there is a lack of studies on the joint effects of these two factors on children.

The most commonly utilized inactivated influenza vaccines (IIVs) are usually deficient in cross immunity against divergent viruses. On the other hand, live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) are proved to be more effective in cross-protective immunity. We previously developed a H9N2 LAIV and verified its effective protection against a broad spectrum of H9N2 strains.

We retrospectively analysed the reliability of anastomosis of the deep venous system as a salvage technique for a free radial forearm flap that has developed venous compromise. The primary predictors were the salvage techniques, which comprised anastomosis of the deep venous system and a repeat of the original anastomosis, and the primary outcome measure was the rate of success. The potential confounders included original venous outflow, the original causes of the venous compromise, and the number of venous anastomoses.

Hemagglutinin (HA) cleavage is critical for virulence of influenza viruses. The amino acid residue at the P6 position of the HA cleavage site (HACS) has been shown to be most variable and to have a direct correlation with the cleavage efficiency and pathogenicity of H5N1 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) in mammals. Among these amino acid variants, serine has been associated with the highest virulence in mammals, and its detection may serve as an indicator for H5N1 AIVs with high pathogenicity and potential public risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how ginsenoside Re (GRe) protects against methamphetamine (MA)-induced neurotoxicity by influencing the relationship between dynorphin and substance P in mice.
  • GRe was found to restore dynorphin levels and reduce the harmful effects caused by MA, with stronger protective effects observed in prodynorphin knockout mice compared to wild-type mice.
  • The results suggest that the balance of dynorphin and substance P is crucial for neuroprotection, as disruptions in this balance lead to increased neurotoxicity and a cascade of oxidative stress and inflammation.
