Gut microbiota-derived metabolites play a pivotal role in the maintenance of intestinal immune homeostasis. Here, we demonstrate that the human commensal possesses a specific metabolic fingerprint, consisting predominantly of the tryptophan catabolite indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), the branched-chain acids (BCFAs) isobutyrate and isovalerate and the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) acetate and propionate. Mono-colonization of germ-free mice with (CS mice) affected colonic mucosal immune cell phenotypes, including up-regulation of gene expression, and increased abundance of transcriptionally active colonic tuft cells and Foxp3 regulatory T cells (Tregs).

Finite size scaling for a first order phase transition, where a continuous symmetry is broken, is tested using an approximation of Gaussian probability distributions with a phenomenological "degeneracy" factor. Predictions are compared to the data from Monte Carlo simulations of the Lebwohl-Lasher model on L × L × L simple cubic lattices. The data show that the intersection of the fourth-order cumulant of the order parameter for different lattice sizes can be expressed in terms of the relative degeneracy q = 4π of the ordered and disordered phases.

From studies molecular dynamics simulations, we report results on structure and dynamics in mixtures of active colloids and passive polymers that are confined inside a spherical container with a repulsive boundary. All interactions in the fully passive limit are chosen in such a way that in equilibrium coexistence between colloid-rich and polymer-rich phases occurs. For most part of the studies the chosen compositions give rise to Janus-like structure: nearly one side of the sphere is occupied by the colloids and the rest by the polymers.

Increased astrocytic Ca signaling has been shown in Alzheimer's disease mouse models, but to date no reports have characterized behaviorally induced astrocytic Ca signaling in such mice. Here, we employ an event-based algorithm to assess astrocytic Ca signals in the neocortex of awake-behaving tg-ArcSwe mice and non-transgenic wildtype littermates while monitoring pupil responses and behavior. We demonstrate an attenuated astrocytic Ca response to locomotion and an uncoupling of pupil responses and astrocytic Ca signaling in 15-month-old plaque-bearing mice.

A model for a mixture of two kinds of semiflexible polymers (A and B) with the same chain length ( = = 32), but different persistence lengths, confined between parallel planar repulsive walls in a common good solvent is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. In the isotropic phase at low polymer concentrations, both polymers are repelled by the walls, and the system is anisotropic near the walls over a range controlled by the polymer linear dimensions. Close to the concentrations where in the bulk nematic order sets in, precursors of thick nematic layers at the walls are observed, strongly enriched by a stiffer component, which hence is depleted in the center of the slit pore.

This study sought to examine the pre-task planning and post-task revising practices of adults with low literacy and how those practices affect overall writing quality. Seventy-six adults with low literacy composed essays in response to a prompt and were given time for pre-task planning and post-task revising. Results showed that participants with higher planning skills were able to utilize planning and revising processes to increase the detail included in their compositions while potentially streamlining the language contained therein.

This study is based on the use of Young's equation for the contact angle, determining all relevant surface tensions from the anisotropy of the pressure tensor. The solvent quality (or effective temperature, equivalently) is varied systematically, while all other interactions remain unaltered.
