Collagen crosslinking, mediated by lysyl oxidase, is an adaptive mechanism of the cardiac repair process initiated by cardiac fibroblasts postmyocardial injury. However, excessive crosslinking leads to cardiac wall stiffening, which impairs the contractile properties of the left ventricle and leads to heart failure.
