Article Synopsis
  • Colorectal adenomas are a major health concern in China, linked to lifestyle changes, where high-fiber diets may lower risk and the impact of food-specific serum IgG is unclear.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between food-specific serum IgG reactivity and colorectal adenomas, considering body mass index as a potential mediator.
  • Results indicated that higher food-specific IgG reactivity is associated with a lower incidence of colorectal adenomas, with BMI mediating a small portion of this effect.

Background: Declining intrinsic capacity (IC) significantly impacts health outcomes in aging populations. While weak handgrip strength (HGS) is associated with IC impairment, the role of HGS asymmetry remains unclear, especially among older Chinese cohorts.

Methods: We included participants aged ≥60 years from the 2015 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS).

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how orthokeratology (ortho-k) treatment affects eye elongation and choroidal vascular changes in children with myopia over a year.
  • Results showed that children treated with ortho-k had significantly less eye elongation compared to those using single vision lenses, along with notable increases in certain choroidal measurements at three months.
  • The findings suggest that changes in the choroidal vasculature may help explain how ortho-k controls myopia progression.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study involving over 74,000 individuals aged 50 and older analyzed data from various international cohorts to evaluate health transitions, disability, and mortality using advanced statistical models, considering gender impacts.
  • * The findings revealed that women face higher risks of advancing to disability while men tend to have lower mortality rates and progress less from one level of disability to another, leading to gender disparities in overall life expectancy, despite women typically living longer.

Effective prevention strategies for post-COVID complications are crucial for patients, clinicians, and policy makers to mitigate their cumulative burden. This study evaluated the association of modifiable lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol intake, BMI, physical activity, sedentary time, sleep duration, and dietary habits) with COVID-19 multisystem sequelae, death, and hospitalization in the UK Biobank cohort (n = 68,896). A favorable lifestyle (6-10 healthy factors; 46.

What Is Already Known About This Topic?: Chronic disease multimorbidity is prevalent among older Chinese people, seriously affecting their well-being and quality of life.

What Is Added By This Report?: This study estimated the impact of multimorbidity on the risk of health state transitions and health expectancy among older adults in China. It used population-representative, long-term longitudinal data and multi-state Markov modeling along with microsimulation methods.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compares the safety of nasogastric (NG) feeding and nasojejunal (NJ) feeding in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP), focusing on feeding initiated within the first 48 hours of hospital admission.
  • - Analysis of 217 patients from four studies revealed similar mortality rates for both feeding methods, but NG feeding was associated with higher instances of diarrhea, pain, and infections compared to NJ feeding.
  • - The findings suggest that while NG feeding can lead to more complications, it does not significantly affect mortality rates or the need for surgery, emphasizing the need to carefully choose feeding methods during early treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and mortality rates of 42 infectious diseases among children and adolescents in China, comparing these to levels before the pandemic.
  • Utilizing the Notifiable Infectious Disease Surveillance System, researchers analyzed data from individuals aged 5-22 from 2018 to 2021, focusing on various categories of infectious diseases and their trends during different phases of the pandemic.
  • Findings reveal a sharp decline in infectious disease cases during the pandemic year (2020) followed by a rebound in 2021, with notable differences between disease types and a consistent decrease in mortality over the four years studied.

The rapid global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, with over a billion doses administered, has been unprecedented. However, in comparison to most identified clinical determinants, the implications of individual genetic factors on antibody responses post-COVID-19 vaccination for breakthrough outcomes remain elusive. Here, we conducted a population-based study including 357,806 vaccinated participants with high-resolution HLA genotyping data, and a subset of 175,000 with antibody serology test results.

Early-life tobacco exposure serves as a non-negligible risk factor for aging-related diseases. To understand the underlying mechanisms, we explored the associations of early-life tobacco exposure with accelerated biological aging and further assessed the joint effects of tobacco exposure and genetic susceptibility. Compared with those without in utero exposure, participants with in utero tobacco exposure had an increase in Klemera-Doubal biological age (KDM-BA) and PhenoAge acceleration of 0.

Background: An accelerated epidemiological transition, spurred by economic development and urbanization, has led to a rapid transformation of the disease spectrum. However, this transition has resulted in a divergent change in the burden of infectious diseases between urban and rural areas. The objective of our study was to evaluate the long-term urban-rural disparities in infectious diseases among children, adolescents, and youths in China, while also examining the specific diseases driving these disparities.

Despite evidence indicating increased risk of psychiatric issues among COVID-19 survivors, questions persist about long-term mental health outcomes and the protective effect of vaccination. Using UK Biobank data, three cohorts were constructed: SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 26,101), contemporary control with no evidence of infection (n = 380,337) and historical control predating the pandemic (n = 390,621). Compared with contemporary controls, infected participants had higher subsequent risks of incident mental health at 1 year (hazard ratio (HR): 1.

Single measures of adiposity markers, such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), are associated with adverse mental health outcomes; however, long-term patterns of adiposity and their health effects remain unclear. The current study assessed adiposity trajectories during a 14-year span beyond middle age and their relevance to mental well-being in late life, and the contribution of genetic and lifestyle factors to the trajectories. Based on a nationally representative sample with longitudinal anthropometric measures, adiposity trajectories were identified by latent mixture modeling, and logistic regression model was used to estimate their associations with mental well-being, with adjustment for confounders.
