Combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin and platinum was performed in 122 patients with stage III-IV squamous-cell cancer and adenocarcinoma of the lung. Control group included 84 cases of non-small-cell lung cancer treated with the same drugs except platinum. Ten patients with stage III disease received platinum-based combination chemotherapy and split-course radiotherapy in the total dose of 65-70 Gy.

The authors examined 36 patients with melanoblastoma and 10 with pigmented nevus. The use of thermography for differential diagnosis of pigmented neoplasms, and as well for early diagnosis of melanoma recurrences and metastases is recommended.

In 53 patients with gastric and intestinal cancer, the content and functional activity of the natural killer cells was studied. The suppression of these indices at the first days after the operation, and restoration of their preoperative levels within 2-2.5 weeks was noted.

Prostaglandins (PG) are studied for their effect on the activity of natural killer cells (NKC) under the tumour growth. The interaction of PG with other regulators of the NKC activity (interferons, interleukins) is considered.

The analysis of 178 cases of stage I-II breast cancer showed morphological features of local cell-mediated immune reactions to be of limited prognostic value. A comparative evaluation of some characteristics of cell surface receptors, such as ability to spontaneous rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes and sensitivity to theophylline, was carried out in lymphocyte samples obtained from tumor tissue and peripheral blood of 76 cancer patients. The said parameters were studied in breast cancer patients with respect to presence or absence of regional metastases.

Hemosorption was carried out in 34 cancer patients. Levels of circulating immune complexes, blastogenic reaction of lymphocytes and E--RFC concentration were assayed before and after treatment. Hemosorption was followed by a significant decrease in circulating immune complex level and an improvement in cell-mediated immunity, which appeared to be in correlation with immediate clinical effect.

Comparative investigation of subpopulations and functional properties of lymphocytes isolated from the tumour tissue (TTL) as well as of lymphocytes of the peripheral blood (PBL) of 11 lung cancer patients and 18 breast cancer patients has shown that an increase in the quantity of theophylline-sensitive cells (suppressors and killers) is characteristic of TTL. After 20 hours of incubation of the mixture of the studied lymphocytes and sheep erythrocytes at 4 degrees C an increase in the number of E-RFC proved to be more intensive for TTL than for PBL. The result obtained may suggest the blocking of the superficial receptors of TTL to sheep erythrocytes.

Experimental and clinical data concerning the interaction of cytostatics with diuretics, anticoagulants, neurotropic drugs, prostaglandin inhibitors, etc. are reviewed. It is considered necessary to take into account the possible clinical effect when applying different drugs for treatment of the tumour patients.

117 patients with breast cancer were subjected to a comparative study for immune complexes by the polyethylene glycol precipitation method, T-lymphocytes by the E-rosette test, serum immunoglobulins by immunodiffusion as well as for lymphocyte blast transformation in response to PHA. The level and incidence of immune complexes were elevated. An increase in the tumour mass with stages is associated with high levels of circulating immune complexes.

The level and possible pathologic relevance of circulating immune complexes (ICs) were investigated by polyethylene glycol precipitation method in sera of 109 untreated cancer patients (melanoblastoma, lung and breast cancer) and 118 patients with various immune complex diseases (collagenosis, nephropathia, vasculitis and immune hemocytopenia). The highest level of ICs was established in all patients with melanoblastoma. The raised concentration of ICs was registered in patients with malignancies of lung and breast (42 and 44%, respectively).
