The use of external beam radiation therapy for primary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been limited by the low radiation tolerance of the non-tumoral liver. However, technical advances allowing partial liver volume external irradiation have resulted in consistently high response rates. Internal radiation therapy, also called (90)Y radioembolization ((90)Y-RE), consists in delivering implantable microspheres labeled with (90)Y into the arteries that feed liver tumors in order to provide a high dose of radiation to tumor nodules irrespective of their number, size and location, while preserving the non-tumoral liver tissue from receiving a harmful level of radiation.

The objective of this study was to identify additional diabetes susceptibility markers in the MHC that could be responsible for the differential diabetogenicity of different HLA-DR3 CEHs. High-resolution SNP genotyping of the MHC was carried out in 15 type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients and 39 non-diabetic controls, homozygous for DR3-DQ2 and with one copy of the A(*)30-B(*)18-MICA(*)4-F1C30-DRB1(*)0301-DQB1(*)0201-DPB1(*)0202 HLA haplotype. Significantly associated SNPs were replicated in an independent sample of 554 T1D patients and 841 controls without HLA matching.

Intra-arterial radiotherapy with yttrium-90 microspheres (radioembolization) is a therapeutic procedure exclusively applied to the liver that allows the direct delivery of high-dose radiation to liver tumors, by means of endovascular catheters, selectively placed within the tumor vasculature. The aim of the study was to describe the distribution of spheres within the precapillaries, inflammatory response, and recannalization characteristics after embolization with nonradioactive resin microspheres in the kidney and liver. The depression rate of C fibre-evoked spinal field potentials by spinally applied morphine is increased in two states of spinal hyperexcitation, namely the spinal ligation model (SNL) of neuropathic pain and long-term potentiation (LTP) of C fibre-evoked spinal field potentials. This present work sought to determine opioid receptor subtypes involved in such increase in the SNL model. Loss of spinal inhibitory mechanisms is thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of abnormal pain states, including neuropathic pain. By using an evoked spinal field potential technique, the hypothesis was tested here that decreased spinal GABAergic control underlies poor response to morphine (MOR) that often accompanies neuropathic pain. Therefore, field potentials evoked by electrical peripheral nerve stimulation during spinal superfusion with MOR were recorded in rats rendered neuropathic by a spinal nerve ligation (SNL) procedure, and compared to responses recorded in naïve rats.

Objectives: Psychotic patients with COMT(Val158Met) Met alleles were recently found to display more intense psychotic and affective responses to daily life stressors. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the Met allele is implicated in the development of affective and psychotic symptomatology in subjects genetically at risk for schizophrenia, by testing if unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia who share a Met allele have greater concordance of symptomatology than relatives not sharing a Met allele.

Background: To the authors' knowledge, liver damage after liver radioembolization with yttrium90-labeled microspheres has never been studied specifically.

Methods: Using a complete set of data recorded prospectively among all patients without previous chronic liver disease treated by radioembolization at the authors' institution from September 2003 to July 2006, patterns of liver damage were identified and possible risk factors were analyzed.

Results: In all, 20% of patients developed a distinct clinical picture that appeared 4 to 8 weeks after treatment and was characterized by jaundice and ascites.

Reduced efficacy of opioid analgesics in some abnormal pain states is a common clinical observation. We tested whether the depressing effect of spinally administered morphine (MOR) on C fibre-evoked spinal field potentials is diminished during long-term potentiation (LTP) induced in the spinal dorsal horn by high-frequency stimulation (HFS). MOR distinctly reduced evoked field potentials 2 h after LTP induction, yet MOR doses suppressing spinal responses in control rats (500 microM) failed to achieve so in HFS-receiving rats.

HepaSphere is a new spherical embolic material developed in a dry state that absorbs fluids and adapts to the vessel wall, leaving no space between the particle and the arterial wall. The aim of this study was to elucidate the final in vivo size, deformation, final location, and main properties of the particles when reconstituted with two different contrast media (Iodixanol and Ioxaglate) in an animal model.
