Objective: There are many adults with cleft lip deformities in developing countries. This is due to the lack of public awareness, social stigma, distance from the health center, and parents' financial condition. Lip repair under local anesthesia is safe, cost-effective and would be beneficial for the underprivileged population.

Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), widespread in the Indian subcontinent, is a chronic debilitating disease of the oral cavity having a high potential for malignancy. The etiology of OSF is debatable. However, recently, autoimmunity had been suggested to play a significant role in its etiology, yet unproven.

It has been shown that a fundamental mode adiabatically launched into a multimode SOI waveguide with submicron grating offers well-defined flat-top bandpass filter characteristics in transmission. The transmitted spectral bandwidth is controlled by adjusting both waveguide and grating design parameters. The bandwidth is further narrowed down by cascading two gratings with detuned parameters.

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the proliferative index (PI) at their invasive front of oral cancer and their association with Bryne's grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and compare the PI with lymph node metastasis, site of involvement, and habits.

Materials And Methods: The Ki-67 antigen expression was immunohistochemically evaluated in a total of 102 cases that included the histopathologically diagnosed archival specimens of OSCCs. They were subdivided by Bryne's histopathological grading into grade I (40 cases), grade II (32 cases), and grade III (30 cases).

Transformation of a normal cell into a cancerous phenotype is essentially backed by genetic mutations that trigger several oncogenic signaling pathways. These signaling pathways rewire the cellular metabolism to meet the bioenergetic and biomass requirement of proliferating cell, which is different from a quiescent cell. Although the change of metabolism in a cancer cell was observed and studied in the mid-20 century, it was not adequate to explain oncogenesis.

Theoretical and experimental studies reveal that a predefined single-mode rib waveguide fabricated in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate with a device layer thickness of 2 μm can be adiabatically trimmed down to submicron waveguide dimensions (<1  μm), resulting in regional modification of waveguide properties. The fabrication process involves physical trimming/removal of a waveguide surface by plasma etchants that is spatially filtered by a shadow mask with a rectangular aperture inside a reactive ion etching system. The exact position of a shadow mask above a sample surface has been optimized (∼500  μm) to obtain the desired adiabatic spot-size converters of length up to 1 mm at both ends of the trimmed waveguides.

A linear piecewise model has been formulated to analyze the performance of a metallic microheater integrated with single-mode waveguides (λ∼1550  nm) in silicon-on-insulator (SOI). The model has been used to evaluate integrated optical microheaters fabricated in a SOI substrate with 2 µm device layer thickness. The Fabry-Perot modulation technique has been used to extract the effective thermo-optic phase shift and response time.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcome and complications of sclerotherapy with injection ethanolamine oleate for the treatment of venous malformations (VMs).

Methods: Eighty-three patients' (39 males and 44 females) age ranging from 3 months to 21 years with 85 lesions were followed clinically for about 1 year following treatment with injection of ethanolamine oleate. The cases were enrolled between January 2006 and December 2009.

Straight and S-bend rib waveguide structures with a novel design have been fabricated and characterized on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. For a typical straight rib waveguide, the single-mode waveguide at lambda approximately 1550 nm has been verified by measuring the near-field output with an IR camera, and a nearly polarization-independent mode size is found to be approximately 10 microm x 4.5 microm.

Objective: To describe the outcome and complications following ethanolamine oleate treatment of venous malformations.

Methods: Seventy-two patients (27 male, 45 female; age range, 3 months to 16 years) with 76 lesions were treated with ethanolamine oleate at 0.50-16 mL per session, with a maximum dose of 0.

A thermally fixed photorefractive Bragg grating is written in a single-mode Ti:Fe:Er:LiNbO3 channel waveguide and used to develop a distributed feedback-distributed Bragg reflector coupled cavity laser with a second broadband dielectric cavity mirror. The optically pumped (lambda(p) = 1480 nm, P = 130 mW) laser emits in single-frequency operation as much as 8 mW at lambda = 1557.2 nm with a slope efficiency of approximately 22%.
