Traditional markers mammaglobin and GCDFP15 show good specificity but lack sensitivity and can be difficult to interpret in small tissue samples. We undertook a comparative study of the novel nuclear marker GATA3 (expression typically restricted to breast and urothelial carcinomas) and GCDFP15 and mammaglobin. We first compared quantitative mRNA expression levels of these 3 markers across a diverse set of over 6000 tumors and 500 normal samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas which showed dramatically higher GATA3 expression (>10-fold higher) in breast cancer as compared with GCDFP15 or mammaglobin (both P<2.

Metastases to the bones in the foot are extremely uncommon, occurring in approximately 0.01% of all metastatic bone disease. We describe a case of an 82-year-old female with a metastatic pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma lesion to the midfoot.

Islet-1 (Isl1) is a transcription factor involved in the embryogenesis of islets of Langerhans. Immunohistochemically, Isl1 is a sensitive lineage-specific marker for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) and their metastases. Its specificity has not been documented, nor have large numbers of NENs from other parts of the gut or other organs been studied.

Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM) and IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) are two fibroinflammatory disorders with potentially overlapping clinical and radiological features. In this paper, we looked for histopathologic features of IgG4-RD and enumerated infiltrating IgG4-positive plasma cells within mediastinal tissue biopsies from FM patients. We identified 15 consecutive FM surgical mediastinal tissue biopsies between 1985 and 2006.

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AP) is one manifestation of a systemic, steroid-responsive disease with elevated serum IgG4 and characteristic histopathology, including increased IgG4-positive (+) plasma cells in the tissue. The histopathology of pulmonary IgG4 disease has not been well established. Six lung biopsies from patients with documented AP were studied, along with 12 additional cases showing similar pulmonary histopathology.
