Millimeter-size carbon dioxide (CO)-sensitive luminescence films emerge as practical sensors in miniaturized biomedical devices for measuring transcutaneous CO. The intensity and lifetime of the excited luminophores in the film carry critical information about the CO values in the surrounding environment. It has been proven that lifetime-based measurement is superior to intensity-based measurement because of its robustness to confounding factors.

Nanotechnology is enabling the development of a new generation of devices which are able to sense, process and communicate, while being in the scale of tens to hundreds of cubic nanometers. Such small, imperceptible devices enhance not only current applications but enable entirely new paradigms especially for in-body environments. Existing methods of engineering alternatives to restore or replace damaged or lost tissues are not satisfactory due to the lack of suitable constructs that can fit precisely, function properly and integrate into host tissues. Recently, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting approaches have been developed to enable the fabrication of pre-programmed synthetic tissue constructs that have precise geometries and controlled cellular composition and spatial distribution. New bioinks with electroconductive properties have the potential to influence cellular fates and function for directed healing of different tissue types including bone, heart and nervous tissue with the possibility of improved outcomes.

The progress of molecular communication (MC) is tightly connected to the progress of nanomachine design. State-of-the-art states that nanomachines can be built either from novel nanomaterials by the help of nanotechnology or they can be built from living cells which are modified to function as intended by synthetic biology.
