Quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) methods are able to differentiate early DLB from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amantadine and cognitive flexibility: decision making in Parkinson's patients with severe pathological gambling and other impulse control disorders.

Introduction: Dopamine replacement therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) was recently linked to the development of impulse control disorders such as pathological gambling (PG), hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and binge or compulsive eating. Antiglutamatergic agents including amantadine (Ama) reduce these behaviors in PD and non-PD patients. The aim of our study is to evaluate the changes in executive functions, emotions, and reward/loss processing during Ama treatment in PD patients.

Combined rehabilitation program for postural instability in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Background: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an atypical parkinsonism clinically characterized by prominent axial extrapyramidal motor symptoms with frequent falls. The clinical response to L-dopa is poor and there is strong need for alternative treatment strategies.

Methods: We tested the efficacy of a rehabilitative program combining a dynamic antigravity postural system (SPAD) and a vibration sound system (ViSS) on postural instability of 10 patients affected by PSP.

Ascertainment bias in dementias: a secondary to tertiary centre analysis in Central Italy and conceptual review.

Background And Aims: Ascertainment bias (AB) indicates a bias of an evaluation centre in estimating the prevalence/incidence of a disease due to the specific expertise of the centre. The aim of our study was to evaluate classification of different types of dementia in new cases appearing in secondary and tertiary centres, in order to evidence possible occurrence of AB in the various (secondary to tertiary) dementia centres.

Methods: To assess the mechanism of AB, the rates of new cases of the different forms of dementia reported by different centres were compared.

Protracted benefit from paradoxical kinesia in typical and atypical parkinsonisms.

Paradoxical kinesia (PK) is the sudden resolution of a previously stabilized akinesia in an advanced idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) patient facing an immediate threat. We are reporting the effect of PK, as a consequence of a life threatening event (earthquake), in a group of 14 patients with parkinsonism and dementia in Hoehn/Yahr (H/Y) stage 3-5. All the patients presented an extraordinary motor response during the earthquake that has recently stricken the Italian city of L'Aquila.
