Globally, forests and savannah are shown to be alternative stable states for intermediate rainfall regimes. This has implications for how these ecosystems respond to changing rainfall conditions. However, we know little about the occurrence of alternative stable states in forest ecosystems in India.

The present study aimed at predicting the potential habitat of Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) in the upper Brahmaputra River Valley, Assam, India, and identifying priority conservation areas for the species, taking canopy cover into account. We used the maximum entropy algorithm for the prediction of the potential habitat of the gibbon using its current distribution with 19 environmental parameters as primary predictors. Spatio-temporal analyses of the habitat were carried out using satellite-based remote sensing and GIS techniques for two decades (1998-2018) along with Terra Modis Vegetation Continuous Field product to examine land use land cover (LULC), habitat fragmentation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and tree cover percentage of the study area.

The present study aimed to conduct a comparative assessment of the external morphology, relative tail length and colour variation (RGB additive colour model) of Macaca munzala, Tawang and Macaca assamensis, Goalpara (southern Brahmaputra population), using a non-invasive photogrammetry method. The study revealed that the relative tail length of M. munzala (0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the population and potential distribution of Macaca munzala in Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh using ecological niche modeling.
  • It found that only 2.4% of Arunachal Pradesh's land is suitable habitat for M. munzala, but 10.19% of the two districts offers potential habitat.
  • A total of 971 individuals were recorded, showing a troop mean size of about 23, with a demographic composition that includes a range of ages and sexes, indicating a healthier population compared to previous records.
