Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy may cause spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and death of newborns. CMV is the most common congenital infection in newborns. It generally has a benign course in immunocompetent individuals, while the severe disease is usually seen in immunocompromised patients.
