Background: Health literacy (HL) impacts people's health and well-being. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), there are no general estimates of the prevalence of low HL. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of low HL among citizens of LAC and identify the tools used to measure it.

Introduction: This systematic review aimed to compare the effect of alternative levothyroxine administration regimens on thyroid hormone levels and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) among adults with hypothyroidism.
Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, LILACS, SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science, OpenGrey, ProQuest, ClinicalTrials.gov, and ICTRP from inception to May/2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
In self-revolving gram-negative infection, Resolvin D5 (RvD5) was found to enhance bacteria phagocytosis and reduce the production of inflammatory mediators, contributing to the resolution of infection. LPS (lipopolysaccharide) is a gram-negative bacterial structure product which activates the immune system and, at high doses, leads to endotoxemia. To our knowledge, the effect of RvD5 against LPS endotoxemia has not been investigated to date.

Objective: To identify the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco drug use among pregnant women and investigate their perceptions regarding advice from health professionals during prenatal care.
Method: We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design for this cross-sectional study; the study period was January 2017 to December 2018. Multistage random sampling resulted in the selection of 255 pregnant women assisted in primary care units and through the Family Health Strategy in a city in southern Brazil.
The main objective of this study was to demonstrate the antimicrobial potential of the crude extract and fractions of Chenopodium ambrosioides L., popularly known as Santa-Maria herb, against microorganisms of clinical interest by the microdilution technique, and also to show the chromatographic profile of the phenolic compounds in the species. The Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of cardiotonic, anthraquinone, alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids.

We evaluated 27 isolates of K. pneumoniae resistant to carbapenems recovered from inpatients at the University Hospital of Santa Maria-RS from July 2013 to August 2014.

Introduction: The predictive role of hyponatremia has been tested in acute and chronic heart failure. Sodium level is inversely related with renin-angiotensin-aldersterone system (RAAS) and sympathetic nervous activity but important issues remain unresolved. Our aim was to define the level of hyponatremia able to predict 1-year outcomes and investigate the relation between sodium levels and mortality and the effect of beta-blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors on this relation.

Aim of this analysis was a quantitative evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic resource use for CHF in outpatient departments in Piedmont, Italy.
Methods: We performed a cross-sectional observational study, based on a two-month data collection in 12 outpatient departments dedicated to congestive heart failure.

We evaluated the effect of acupuncture on NSAID resistant dysmenorrhea related pain [measured according to Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)] in 15 consecutive patients. Pain was measured at baseline (T1), mid treatment (T2), end of treatment (T3) and 3 (T4) and 6 months (T5) after the end of treatment. Substantial reduction of pain and NSAID assumption was observed in 13 of 15 patients (87%).

The neck-suction induces heart rate changes only by means of nervous reflex and its hemodynamic effect is local and hence appears as a useful method for assessing reinnervation. We tested the presence of autonomic reinnervation in 18 heart transplant recipients, compared to 12 donor-age-matched controls.

Cardiopathies and non-cardiopathies were assessed separately. In the first group, no significant differences were observed with respect to the presence of heart rhythm disturbances.

Anti-Xa and anti-IIa heparin activities were monitored together with aPTT, thrombin time, bleeding time and euglobulin lysis time. No relevant changes in bleeding time or major side-effects were ever recorded.

Defibrotide is a polynucleotide extracted from mammalian lung, which shows antithrombotic and anti-ischaemic activity in animals, probably related to stimulation of fibrinolysis and/or enhancement of prostacyclin production. The effect of a single infusion of defibrotide on fibrinolysis and the levels of certain prostanoids in man has been investigated in a cross-over double-blind placebo-controlled study. Evaluation of changes in fibrinolysis was difficult because of the spontaneous activation observed after placebo.

Treatment with L-asparaginase (L-Asp) induced a marked decrease in fibrinogen and plasminogen and only a slight but significant reduction in AT III:A, AT III:Ag, protein C and alpha 2 antiplasmin levels. Platelet counts progressively increased.
