Neurodegenerative biomarkers and inflammation in patients with propionic and methylmalonic acidemias: effect of L-carnitine treatment.

Propionic and methylmalonic acidemias (PAcidemia and MMAcidemia, respectively) are genetic disorders characterized by acute metabolic decompensation and neurological complications. L-carnitine (LC) is effective in reducing toxic metabolites that are related to the pathophysiology of these diseases. Therefore we investigated biomarkers of inflammation (cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP)), neurodegeneration (BDNF, NCAM-1 and cathepsin-D) and biomolecules oxidation (sulfhydryl content and thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS)), as well as carnitine concentrations in untreated patients with PAcidemia and MMAcidemia, in patients under treatment with LC and a protein-restricted diet for until 2 years and in patients under the same treatment for more than 2 years.

In parallel, 3D and 4D food printing have emerged with the potential to enhance food processing. Technological innovation to colostomy bags: quasi-experimental study.

Objective: To verify the effect of the bag with irrigation valve on the pattern of (dis)comfort of the colostomy person.

Method: Quasi-experimental study, with a single group, through pre and post-test, carried out from June to September/2020 with 33 colostomized patients from a municipal rehabilitation center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The pattern of (dis)comfort was analyzed using fuzzy logic, considering the attributes of bag cleaning, gas elimination and odor control.

Clinical findings of patients with hyperammonemia affected by urea cycle disorders with hepatic encephalopathy.

Urea cycle disorders (UCD) are a group of genetic diseases caused by deficiencies in the enzymes and transporters involved in the urea cycle. The impairment of the cycle results in ammonia accumulation, leading to neurological dysfunctions and poor outcomes to affected patients. The aim of this study is to investigate and describe UCD patients' principal clinical and biochemical presentations to support professionals on urgent diagnosis and quick management, aiming better outcomes for patients.

Niemann Pick type C is an inborn error of metabolism (IEM), classified as a lysosomal storage disease (LSD) caused by a dysfunction in NPC transport protein, that leads to intracellular accumulation of non-esterified cholesterol and other lipids. Clinical manifestations are ample, with visceral and neurological symptoms. Miglustat, a molecule that reversibly inhibits glucosylceramide synthase is used as treatment for this disorder.

Introduction: Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) exercises and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) are described as conservative interventions to prevent or treat female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). However, it has not been described yet the effect of PFMT associated to intravaginal NMES which evaluated the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of treating.

Aims: To evaluate the effects of intravaginal NMES associated with the PFMT protocol on urinary loss and quality of life in women with SUI and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility and pelvic floor muscle in women with SUI.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, women had to adapt their lifestyles to get accustomed to the restrictive measures. The present study aimed to investigate the association between lifestyle habits, anxiety, and depression symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic between incontinent and continent women.

Prevalence of Psychiatric Diagnoses and Psychiatric Consultation Service Utilization on Inpatient Medical Units.

Objective: This practice improvement project sought to determine the prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses among patients admitted to a community hospital's inpatient medical units and which diagnoses were serviced by the hospital's psychiatric consultation service.

Method: Electronic medical record data on adult patients of five medical units admitted with a psychiatric condition between October 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, were used. Psychiatric ICD-10 () codes and diagnosis names extracted were categorized into seven major diagnostic groups.

Method: A scoping review, based on the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, was carried out between December 2019 and May 2020. The studies included male and female health professionals, who wore PPE during the global pandemic, in any given scenario.

Glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA-1) is a rare but treatable inherited disease caused by deficiency of glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase activity due to GCDH gene mutations. In this study, we report 24 symptomatic GA-1 Brazilian patients, and present their clinical, biochemical, and molecular findings. Patients were diagnosed by high levels of glutaric and/or 3-hydroxyglutaric and glutarylcarnitine.

The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and precision of 3D printers used to obtain models of fixed dental prostheses. A fixed dental prosthesis preparation was scanned and reproduced by four 3D printers: RapidShape P40, Asiga MAX, Varseo, and Photon. The impressions were scanned again, and the dataset was compared to the original dataset.

Purpose: To analyze the recognition of the pictures and contexts familiarity from the Sentence Production Program for Aphasia (SPPA) to acquire data determining its potential use in Portuguese and/or need for adaption.

Methods: The stimuli for English speakers were first translated, back-translated and adjusted without changing the syntactic structures of the phrases. The material was then tested in 39 highly literate individuals.

Association between the Rosén and Lundborg Score and the Screening Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness scale in hand functional evaluation of patients with leprosy diagnosis.

Purpose: To evaluate the association of results from the Rosén and Lundborg Score and the screening activity limitation and Safety Awareness scale for the assessment of hand in patients diagnosed with leprosy.

Method: An association between the Rosén and Lundborg Score and the Screening Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness scale for hand was evaluated in a cross-section study with 25 people of a mean age of 51 years old (SD 14), undergoing drug treatment for leprosy.

Results: The mean quantitative score in the Screening Activity Limitation and Safety Awareness scale was 27.

Limitation of activity and restriction of social participation in relation to age range, gender, and education in people with leprosy.

Background: In Brazil, 38,000 new cases of leprosy are discovered each year, making it a public health problem.

Objective: To identify whether or not there is an association between activity limitations and the restriction of social participation with some demographic data (age range, gender, and education) of the patients in a Basic Health Unit (BHU), diagnosed with leprosy.

Methods: The SALSA scale was used to assess activity limitations, whereas the Participation scale was used to assess the restriction of social participation.
