A flexible interface to perform optical spectroscopic measurements on gaseous ions stored in a modified commercial quadrupole ion trap (QIT) mass spectrometer is described. The modifications made to the mass spectrometer did not adversely affect its operating characteristics. Gas-phase ions are produced using electrospray ionization, mass isolated and stored in the trapping mass spectrometer.

The title compound, (C(21)H(33)N(2)O)(2)[SmCl(5)(C(4)H(8)O)]·C(7)H(8)·C(4)H(8)O, has a layered structure in which each distorted octa-hedral [SmCl(5)(THF)](2-) unit (THF is tetra-hydro-furan) is capped by two cations. The central metal Sm(III) atom of the [SmCl(5)(THF)](2-) anionic unit is coordinated by five Cl atoms and one THF O atom, forming a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The crystal structure displays C-H⋯Cl and O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding.

We have demonstrated previously that oxidative inactivation of the proteasome is a molecular link between oxidative stress and overexpression of interleukin (IL)-8. Here, we elucidated a novel signaling cascade that leads to up-regulation of IL-8 in response to proteasome inactivation.

Objective: To study the efficacy and possible mechanism of Yiqi Huayu Recipe (YQHYR), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, in preventing and treating degeneration of the articular cartilage in rats with osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods: A total of 90 one-month-old SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group, untreated group and YQHYR group, with 30 rats in each group. The osteoarthritis was induced by shoulder disarticulation plus upright posture in rats.
Objective: To explore the mechanism of Yiqi Huayu Bushen Recipe (YHBR), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, in treating cervical syndrome (CS) with qi deficiency, blood stasis and kidney deficiency in rats.
Methods: A total of 30 three-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal control group, untreated group and YHBR group; there were ten rats in each group. The rat model of cervical syndrome with qi deficiency, blood stasis and kidney deficiency was established by combining disease and syndrome models.

Objective: To research the action mechanism of Yiqi Huayu Bushen Recipe (YHBR), a compound of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, in treating cervical syndrome (CS) with kidney deficiency in rats.
Methods: A total of 30 three-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal control group, CS with kidney deficiency model group (untreated group) and YHBR group, with 10 rats in each group. Rats in the normal control group received no treatment, while rats of the other two groups underwent resection of both cervical muscles and ovaries to establish the model of CS with kidney deficiency.

Objective: To establish a rat model of cervical syndrome with qi deficiency, blood stasis and kidney deficiency.
Methods: A total of 30 three-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal group, cervical syndrome group and cervical syndrome with qi deficiency, blood stasis and kidney deficiency group (combined group), with 10 rats in each group. Rats in the normal group received no treatment, rats in cervical syndrome group underwent resection of cervical muscles and ligaments as unbalanced dynamic and static animal model, and rats in combined group underwent resection of both cervical muscles and ovaries, swimming and irregular diet, and injection of adrenal cortex hormone and adrenaline two and a half months after resection as combined model.
NF-kappaB is a family of important transcription factors involved in many cellular functions, such as cell survival, proliferation, and stress responses. Many studies indicate that NF-kappaB is a stress-sensitive transcription factor and its activation is regulated by reactive oxygen species. In previous studies, we and others demonstrated that this transcription factor can be activated by transient oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of many age-related diseases. Stress-induced overproduction of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-8 (IL-8), is one of the early events of inflammation. The objective of this study was to elucidate mechanistic links between oxidative stress and overproduction of IL-8 in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells.

The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP) is one of the protein quality control mechanisms that selectively degrade damaged or obsolete proteins. The other arm of the protein quality control mechanism is molecular chaperones, which bind to and help refold unfolded or misfolded proteins.

In this study we investigated the neuroprotective effects of lithium in gerbils subjected to global cerebral ischemia, an animal model of stroke. The ischemia-induced exploratory behavior changes, measured by open field testing, were largely suppressed by lithium treatment for 7 days prior to ischemic onset.

An accumulating body of evidences point to the significance of neuroinflammation and immunogenetics in schizophrenia, characterized by increased serum concentration of several pro-inflammatory cytokines. In the central nervous system (CNS), the microglial cells are the major immunocompetent cells which release pro-inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species to mediate the inflammatory process. In the present study, we investigated whether or not atypical antipsychotics, namely perospirone, quetiapine and ziprasidone, would have anti-inflammatory effects on the activated microglia which may potentiate neuroprotection.

In the FEL experiment, when electron beam passes through the wiggler, the movement of electron beam will be changed to wiggle in the wiggler due to the periodical magnet field. Meanwhile the electron beam will spontaneously emit the radiation with a wavelength similiar to the FEL radiation. This radiation is influenced by the parameters of both the electron beam and the wiggler.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the toxic effect of 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) on testicular functions of rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administered different doses of OP at the levels of 0 (control), 50, 150 and 450 mg/kg/d for 30 d. Testicular functions were assessed by histopathology, testicular sperm head counts, daily sperm production, sperm motility (measured by computer assisted sperm analysis, CASA) and biochemical indices (marker testicular enzymes).
