Expression and function of COOH-terminal myosin heavy chain isoforms in mouse smooth muscle.

Isoforms of the smooth muscle myosin motor, SM1 and SM2, differ in length at the carboxy terminal tail region. Their proportion changes with development, hormonal status and disease, but their function is unknown. We developed mice carrying the myosin heavy chain (MyHC) transgenes SM1, cMyc-tagged SM1, SM2, and V5-tagged SM2, and all transgenes corresponded to the SMa NH(2)-terminal isoform.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of urinary bladder - a diagnostic and management dilemma.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPT) are uncommon, benign, non-epithelial tumors of the urinary bladder. Only less than 30 cases have been reported so far in world's literature. The transititional cell carcinoma constitutes 90% of malignant epithelial tumors of urinary bladder.

Twenty nail dystrophy in vitiligo.

Twenty nail dystrophy (TND) is a manifestation of several dermatoses and its association with vitiligo is rare. It may be consequent upon a common autoimmune insult to the melanocytes and the nail matrix. We report a patient of acrofacial vitiligo who developed TND.

Anhidrosis: a clue to an underlying autonomic disorder.

We describe a patient with Ross syndrome who had the classic triad of segmental anhidrosis, tonic pupils and hyporeflexia. Dilute pilocarpine (0.1%) instillation in both eyes revealed parasympathetic denervation hypersensitivity.

Efficacy of isoniazid prophylaxis in renal allograft recipients.

The efficacy of isoniazid (INH) prophylaxis in renal allograft recipients who are on long-term immunosuppression in a region highly prevalent for tuberculosis (TB) was studied. INH (300 mg/d in patients weighing more than 35 kg and 5 mg/kg/d in patients with <35 kg body weight) together with Pyridoxine 50 mg/d for 1 year was started in randomly assigned renal allograft recipients. Occurrence of clinical tuberculosis during the initial 2 years posttransplantation was observed in the risk group and patients at no risk.

Fifty years later: A neurodynamic explanation of Fitts' law.

An intrinsic property of human motor behaviour is a trade-off between speed and accuracy. This is classically described by Fitts' law, a model derived by assuming the human body has a limited capacity to transmit information in organizing motor behaviour. Here, we propose an alternative foundation, based on the neurodynamics of the motor circuit, wherein Fitts' law is an approximation to a more general relationship.

Role of progestin-induced mammary-derived growth hormone in the pathogenesis of cystic endometrial hyperplasia in the bitch.

Endogenous progesterone and synthetic progestins may induce hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH) of mammary origin, hyperplastic ductular changes in the mammary gland, and the development of cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) in dogs. It was investigated whether progestin-induced mammary GH plays a role in the pathogenesis of CEH in the bitch. During 1 year, bitches with surgically excised mammary glands and healthy control bitches received medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA).

Effects of food intake and food withholding on plasma ghrelin concentrations in healthy dogs.

Objective: To investigate the physiologic endocrine effects of food intake and food withholding via measurement of the circulating concentrations of acylated ghrelin, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), glucose, and insulin when food was administered at the usual time, after 1 day's withholding, after 3 days' withholding and after refeeding the next day in healthy Beagles.

Animals: 9 healthy Beagles.

Procedures: Blood samples were collected from 8:30 AM to 5 PM from Beagles when food was administered as usual at 10 AM, after 1 day's withholding, after 3 days' withholding, and after refeeding at 10 AM the next day.

Prognostic value of bone marrow angiogenesis in multiple myeloma: use of light microscopy as well as computerized image analyzer in the assessment of microvessel density and total vascular area in multiple myeloma and its correlation with various clinical, histological, and laboratory parameters.

We studied the prognostic value of parameters of angiogenesis on bone marrow biopsies in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Angiogenesis parameters studied were the microvessel count done manually on light microscopy (MVD-A), microvessel count done by using computerized image analyzer (MVD-B), and total vascular area (TVA) measured by computerized image analyzer. One hundred ten newly diagnosed cases of MM treated at Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, were analyzed with respect to clinical features, laboratory findings, histological features, angiogenesis parameters, and responses to the treatment on follow-up.

Purpose: Congenital cataract is a significant cause of blindness worldwide. Many genes are known to cause the disorder. A large multigenerational pedigree was investigated for the genetic cause of a posterior polar autosomal dominant congenital cataract.

Non-dysraphic intramedullary spinal cord lipoma.

True intramedullary spinal cord lipomas are extremely rare. Two cases of intramedullary spinal cord lipoma are presented. The patients did not exhibit any form of spinal dysraphism.

Laryngeal paralysis-polyneuropathy complex in young related Pyrenean mountain dogs.

Objectives: To characterise clinical, electrophysiological and histopathological findings. To analyse pedigree information in six young related Pyrenean mountain dogs with laryngeal paralysis-polyneuropathy complex (LP-PNC).

Methods: A retrospective study of clinical records and pedigrees of six young related Pyrenean mountain dogs with LP-PNC was carried out.

Treatment of growth hormone excess in dogs with the progesterone receptor antagonist aglépristone.

Acromegaly or hypersomatotropism in dogs is almost always due to progestin-induced hypersecretion of GH originating from the mammary gland. The aim of this study was to investigate whether aglépristone, a progesterone receptor antagonist, can be used to treat this form of canine acromegaly. In five Beagle bitches hypersomatotropism was induced by administration of MPA for over 1 year.

Adenohypophyseal function in bitches treated with medroxyprogesterone acetate.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of treatment with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) on canine adenohypophyseal function. Five Beagle bitches were treated with MPA (10mg/kg, every 4 weeks) and their adenohypophyseal function was assessed in a combined adenohypophyseal function test. Four hypophysiotropic hormones (CRH, GHRH, GnRH, and TRH) were administered before and 2, 5, 8, and 11 months after the start of MPA treatment, and blood samples for determination of the plasma concentrations of ACTH, cortisol, GH, IGF-1, LH, FSH, prolactin, alpha-MSH, and TSH were collected at -15, 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 45 min after suprapituitary stimulation.

Computerized stereotactic brain biopsies: an experience of 15 patients at Ayub Teaching Hospital.

Background: Deep seated lesions of the brain cannot be approached by conventional neurosurgical approach stereotactic system offers minimally invasive and accurate approach to such lesions. This study was carried out with an objective to determine the safety, efficacy and diagnostic yield of stereotactic biopsies of brain lesions using Brown-Roberts-Wells (BRW) system.

Histoplasma endocarditis: clinical and mycologic features and outcomes.

Objectives: To define the salient clinical and microbiologic characteristics and outcome of infective endocarditis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum.

Methods: Case report and review of 43 literature cases.

Results: Infection involved both native (36 cases) and prosthetic (7) heart valves, had a high rate of systemic embolization (58%), and a more delayed diagnosis than bacterial endocarditis.

Sensory neuropathy in two Border collie puppies.

A peripheral sensory neuropathy was diagnosed in two Border collie puppies. Neurological, electrophysiological and histopathological examinations suggested a purely sensory neuropathy with mainly distal involvement. Urinary incontinence was observed in one of the puppies and histological examination of the vagus nerve revealed degenerative changes.
