In the past, ablation of cancer cells using radiofrequency heating techniques has been demonstrated, but the current methodology has many flaws, including inconsistent tumor ablation and significant ablation of normal cells. Other researchers have begun to develop a treatment that is more selective for cancer cells using metallic nanoparticles and constant electric field exposure. In these studies, cell necrosis is induced by heating antibody functionalized metallic nanoparticles attached to cancer cells.

We report a case of a 40-year-old seropositive-HIV patient with a CD4 count of 120 who presented with fever, severe headache and neck stiffness. Suspecting a case of tubercular meningitis (TBM; as tuberculosis is the commonest opportunistic infection in HIV/AIDS patients in India), a lumbar puncture was performed and a cerebrospinal fluid study revealed TBM. The patient was started on combination antitubercular drug therapy from directly observed treatment, short course (DOTS) (Cat 1 regimen) along with pyridoxine 40 mg/day and adjunctive corticosteroid therapy.

Selected arsenic-volatilizing indigenous soil bacteria were isolated and their ability to form volatile arsenicals from toxic inorganic arsenic was assessed. Approximately 37 % of AsIII (under aerobic conditions) and 30 % AsV (under anaerobic conditions) were volatilized by new bacterial isolates in 3 days. In contrast to genetically modified organism, indigenous soil bacteria was capable of removing 16 % of arsenic from contaminated soil during 60 days incubation period while applied with a low-cost organic nutrient supplement (farm yard manure).

Femtosecond upconversion, single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (sm-FRET) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) are applied to study the competition between excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) and FRET [to rhodamine 6G (R6G)] of 8-hydroxypyranine-1,3,6-trisulfonate (HPTS) in cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) micelles. Pyranine exhibits dual emission at λ(em)=430 nm for ROH and 520 nm for RO(-). The absorption spectrum of R6G (acceptor) has very good overlap with the RO(-) emission and poor overlap with ROH emission.

Membrane permeabilization is imperative for gene and drug delivery systems, along with other cell manipulation methods, since the average eukaryotic cell membrane is not permeable to polar and large nonpolar molecules. Antibody conjugated optically absorbing gold nanospheres are targeted to the cell membrane of T47D breast cancer cell line and irradiated with 5 ns pulse, 20 Hz, 532 nm light to increase membrane permeability. Up to 90% permeabilization with less than 6% death is reported at radiant exposures up to 10 times lower than those of other comparable studies.

This paper describes a new series of organometallic water-soluble chelators combining a redox moiety (ferrocene) and a selective Ca2+ chelator (BAPTA) separated by an ethynyl bridge. We report the synthesis and characterization of organometallic derivatives of the BAPTA chelator featuring one (2a) and two ferrocenyl (2b) moieties. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis on these chelators revealed unexpected conformations for the ferrocenyl substituent with respect to the phenyl ring of the BAPTA unit.

Appropriate constructions of Padé approximants are believed to provide reasonable estimates of the asymptotic (large-coupling) amplitude and exponent of an observable, given its weak-coupling expansion to some desired order. In many instances, however, sequences of such approximants are seen to converge very poorly. We outline here a strategy that exploits the idea of fractional calculus to considerably improve the convergence behavior.

The role of a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL, [pmim][Br]) on the size and conformational dynamics of a protein, horse heart cytochrome c (Cyt C) in its native, molten globule (MG-I and II), and unfolded states is studied using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). For this purpose, the protein was covalently labeled by a fluorescent dye, Alexa Fluor 488. It is observed that the addition of the RTIL leads to an increase in the hydrodynamic radius (r(H)) of the protein, Cyt C in the native or MG-I state.

Excited state proton transfer (ESPT) of pyranine (8-hydroxypyranine-1,3,6-trisulfonate, HPTS) in a niosome is studied by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and femtosecond up-conversion. The niosome consists of a neutral surfactant triton X-100 (TX-100) and cholesterol. FCS studies suggest that in the presence of niosome almost all of the HPTS is transferred to the niosome and the amount of free HPTS present in bulk water is negligible.

Picosecond spectroscopy under a confocal microscope is employed to study solvation dynamics of coumarin 153 (C153) inside a single giant lipid vesicle (1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, DLPC) of diameter 20 μm. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) indicates that the diffusion coefficient (D(t)) of the probe (coumarin153, C153) in the immobilized vesicle displays a wide distribution from ~3 to 21 μm(2) s(-1). The distribution of D(t) suggests that the microenvironment of the probe (C153) is highly heterogeneous and the local friction is different for probe molecules in different regions.

Giant multilameller niosomes containing cholesterol and triton X-100 are studied using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) data indicates formation of niosomes of broadly two different sizes (diameter)--~150 nm and ~1300 nm. Structure and dynamics of acrylodan labeled αA-crystallin tetramer formed in the presence of a bile salt (sodium deoxycholate, NaDC) has been studied using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and femtosecond up-conversion techniques. Using FCS it is shown that, the diffusion constant (D(t)) of the αA-crystallin oligomer (mass ~800 kDa) increases from ~35 μm(2) s(-1) to ~68 μm(2) s(-1). This corresponds to a decrease in hydrodynamic radius (r(h)) from ~6.

The effect of two room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) on the diffusion of three fluorescent dyes in the gel phase of a triblock copolymer, (PEO)(20)-(PPO)(70)-(PEO)(20) [Pluronic P123; poly ethylene oxide (PEO), poly propylene oxide (PPO)], was studied by using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). We used three dyes, 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), coumarin 480 (C480), and coumarin 343 (C343). By field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), it was observed that the macroscopic structure of the P123 gel remained unaffected upon addition of RTIL.

The main objective of presenting the case series is that despite dramatic symptomatic response by intra venous lorazepam or electro convulsive therapy irrespective of primary diagnosis in catatonia cases some cases remain difficult to treat by conventional treatment. Here, we present five catatonia cases who did not respond to conventional treatment even when treated for primary psychiatric diagnosis along with treatment for catatonia. They ultimately responded partially or completely to clozapine only, which explains the multi-factorial causation of catatonia syndrome as postulated by different scientific research.

Undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy (uSpA) is a nonspecific form of spondyloarthropathy where nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs are still mainstay of treatment. We evaluated the efficacy and adverse effect profile of pamidronate, in uSpA patients refractory to NSAIDs therapy. A case series of 87 patients fulfilling the modified Amor criteria for the diagnosis of uSpA, having active disease even after 3-month continuous therapy with two NSAIDs, were selected.
