Electroconvulsive Therapy in Canada During the First Wave of COVID-19: Results of the "What Happened" National Survey.

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the provision of essential and potentially life-saving procedural treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). We surveyed ECT providers across Canada to understand how the first wave of the pandemic affected ECT delivery between mid-March 2020 and mid-May 2020.

Methods: The survey was administered to ECT team members and decision makers at 107 Canadian health care centers with a focus on 5 domains: operations, decision-making, hospital resources, ECT procedure, and patient impact.

Background: With the paucity of high-quality studies on longitudinal basic critical care echocardiography (BCCE) training, expert opinion guidelines have guided BCCE competence educational standards and processes. However, existing guidelines lack precise detail due to methodological flaws during guideline development.

Research Questions: To formulate methodologically robust guidelines on BCCE training using evidence and expert opinion, detailing specific criteria for every step, we conducted a modified Delphi process using the principles of the validated AGREE-II tool.

Using total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) measurements as a tool for assessing potential human health risks associated with exposures to petroleum products in the environment poses unique challenges, as TPH represents highly variable and complex mixtures containing hundreds of individual chemicals with wide-ranging chemical and physical properties. Current risk assessment practice generally involves analysis of environmental samples for various TPH fractions and summation of risk across those fractions. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) derived provisional toxicity criteria for low, medium, and high carbon range aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon fractions over a decade ago.

More information about viral load dynamics and replication is needed for clarity on duration of infectiousness of an individual, along with its implications on transmission. This is important to healthcare facilities and public health authorities in formulating guidance on the duration of isolation for patients and return to work criteria for healthcare workers.

Purpose: The current study was conducted to assess the remineralization potential of CPP-ACP and a customized dentifrice (tricalcium-phosphate) on artificial carious lesions using DIAGNOdent.

Materials And Methods: Fifty-one extracted premolars that satisfied the inclusion criteria were painted using acid-resistant nail varnish. A window of 4 × 4 mm was exposed on the center of the buccal surface of each tooth.

Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction is the current standard care of treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Modified transtibial (mTT) and anteromedial portal (AMP) techniques aim at the anatomical placement of femoral tunnel. Controversy existed in the literature with regard to the outcome of these techniques.

Structuro-functional surrogates of response to subcallosal cingulate deep brain stimulation for depression.

Subcallosal cingulate deep brain stimulation produces long-term clinical improvement in approximately half of patients with severe treatment-resistant depression. We hypothesized that both structural and functional brain attributes may be important in determining responsiveness to this therapy. In a treatment-resistant depression subcallosal cingulate deep brain stimulation cohort, we retrospectively examined baseline and longitudinal differences in MRI-derived brain volume (n = 65) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET glucose metabolism (n = 21) between responders and non-responders.

Recent reports on COVID-19 suggest that, the susceptibility to COVID-19 infection and its progression have a genetic predisposition. Majorly associated genetic variants are found in human leukocyte antigen (HLA), angiotensin convertase enzyme (ACE; rs1799752: ACE2; rs73635825, and transmembrane protease serine 2 (; rs12329760 genes. Identifying highly prone population having these variants is imperative for determining COVID-19 therapeutic strategies.

Potential optimization of focused ultrasound capsulotomy for obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a debilitating and often refractory psychiatric disorder. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound is a novel, minimally invasive neuromodulatory technique that has shown promise in treating this condition. We investigated the relationship between lesion location and long-term outcome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with focused ultrasound to discern the optimal lesion location and elucidate the efficacious network underlying symptom alleviation.

Ayurveda botanicals in COVID-19 management: An in silico multi-target approach.

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2 has become a global pandemic in a very short time span. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine to counter this highly contagious disease. There is an urgent need to find a specific cure for the disease and global efforts are directed at developing SARS-CoV-2 specific antivirals and immunomodulators.

Management of Obscurely Dilated Common Bile Duct with Normal Liver Function Tests: A Pragmatic Approach.

Objective: Dilated common bile duct (CBD) (8-15 mm) with normal liver function tests is seen not infrequently, while management of such patients is ambiguous. We propose a treatment algorithm for this cohort of patients after observing them over a period of 8 years.

Methods: Seventy-eight such patients were managed from 2009 to 2017 and categorized as: Group A-dilated CBD with post-cholecystectomy status (n = 15); B-dilated CBD with cholelithiasis (n = 34); C-dilated CBD without cholelithiasis (n = 16); D-dilated CBD with no cause identified and underwent CBD excision (n = 13).

We report a male infant with developmental regression, macrocytic anaemia and hyperpigmentation. Exome sequencing identified a homozygous pathogenic variant in the gene, known to cause homocystinuria, cblD type (MIM #277410).

Effect of moderate aerobic exercises on symptoms of functional dyspepsia.

Background: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a commonly encountered entity worldwide and is difficult to treat. Most of the treatment modalities have low-quality evidence for use, except for proton pump inhibitors. Aerobic exercise has been shown to improve the symptoms, but its direct effect on symptoms has never been studied.

Does oropharyngeal administration of colostrum reduce morbidity and mortality in very preterm infants? A randomised parallel-group controlled trial.

Aim: To evaluate whether a strategy of oropharyngeal administration of colostrum reduces morbidity and mortality in very preterm infants.

Methods: A total of 260 neonates with gestational age 26-31 weeks at birth were randomised between August 2017 and August 2018 to receive 0.2 mL of human milk or placebo respectively via the oropharyngeal route, beginning within 24 h after birth, and continued every 3 h until oral feeds were initiated.

Anticancer effects of radiation therapy combined with Polo-Like Kinase 4 (PLK4) inhibitor CFI-400945 in triple negative breast cancer.

Development of novel multimodality radiotherapy treatments in metastatic breast cancer, especially in the most aggressive triple negative (TNBC) subtype, is of significant clinical interest. Here we show that a novel inhibitor of Polo-Like Kinase 4 (PLK4), CFI-400945, in combination with radiation, exhibits a synergistic anti-cancer effect in TNBC cell lines and patient-derived organoids in vitro and leads to a significant increase in survival to tumor endpoint in xenograft models in vivo, compared to control or single-agent treatment. Further preclinical and proof-of-concept clinical studies are warranted to characterize molecular mechanisms of action of this combination and its potential applications in clinical practice.
