Article Synopsis
  • * Findings: Most studies found that while spinal cord stimulators led to increased medical costs, these costs were balanced by significant improvements in patients' quality of life. The cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) was under $25,000, indicating a reasonable expenditure for health benefits.
  • * Conclusion: Spinal cord stimulators are more effective and have a better cost-effectiveness ratio compared to conventional medical treatments or re-operation for failed back surgery syndrome. The newer stimulation techniques have shown even more favorable results in clinical trials.
