Background: 'Standard of care' therapies for adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have yielded 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of 30%-45 %. Risk stratification and novel targeted therapies have improved 5-year OS rates to >75 % for certain groups in specialized centers.

Patients And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort analysis of outcomes in patients ≥18 years with newly diagnosed AML treated between 2005 and 2019 in the Harris Health County, Safety-Net Hospital System in Houston, TX.

Background: In rodents, third-trimester-equivalent alcohol exposure (TTAE) produces significant deficits in hippocampal-dependent memory processes such as contextual fear conditioning (CFC). The present study sought to characterize changes in both behavior and Fos neurons following CFC in ethanol (EtOH)-treated versus saline-treated mice using TRAP2:Ai14 mice that permanently label Fos neurons following a tamoxifen injection. We hypothesized that TTAE would produce long-lasting disruptions to the networks engaged following CFC with a particular emphasis on the limbic memory system.

Background: Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a sporadic neurodegenerative disease without a clear geographic prevalence. Cohorts studied in the UK and India showed no higher prevalence of atypical parkinsonism in South Asian patients. We describe the ethnic and racial background of PSP patients in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Canada.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between a history of bicycling and symptomatic and structural outcomes of knee osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study within the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), where we investigated OAI participants with complete data on bicycling, knee pain, and radiographic evidence of knee OA. We used a self-administered questionnaire at the 96-month OAI visit to identify participation in bicycling during four time periods throughout a participant's lifetime (ages 12-18, 19-34, 35-49, and >50 yr).

Background: The impact of age of onset on the presentation of progressive supranuclear palsy phenotypes is not well studied. We hypothesized that there is difference in presentation and phenotype between young- and late-onset PSP.

Objectives: Our aim was to compare phenotypes and rate of change in disability between young-onset PSP (YOPSP) and late-onset PSP (LOPSP).

Introduction: Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is an uncommon neurological complication resulting from the reactivation of latent herpes zoster virus. The condition often presents with facial paralysis, palatal ulcers, dysphagia, and altered taste sensation, leading to reduced quality of life. Standard therapeutic options for RHS have limitations, prompting the exploration of alternative treatments with improved prognostic outcomes.

Flaccid paralysis is a neurological syndrome characterized by weakness and paralysis of the limbs, followed by reduced muscle tone. Common causes of flaccid paralysis include blockage of the anterior spinal artery, trauma to the spinal cord, cancer, arterial disease, or thrombosis. A potential differential diagnosis in a 35-year-old male presenting with sudden-onset flaccid paralysis with no history of trauma is hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

Up to 17.6% of COVID-19 positive patients present with gastrointestinal symptoms and bowel wall abnormalities have been described in up to 31% of COVID-19 positive patients. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old male diagnosed with COVID-19 complicated by hemorrhagic colitis leading to colonic perforation.

Primary bone lymphoma (PBL) is a rare extranodal presentation within lymphomas and primary bone malignancies. Pathologic fracture (PF) is a common complication of metastatic bone disease but is, rarely, the presentation of a primary bone tumor. We report a case of an 83-year-old man with a history of untreated prostate cancer, presenting with atraumatic fracture of his left femur after months of intermittent pains and weight loss.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary splenic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PS-DLBCL) is a rare type of lymphoma that primarily affects the spleen and can sometimes mimic an abscess.
  • A 62-year-old patient showed symptoms such as flank pain and abdominal swelling, leading to the discovery of an 8-cm splenic mass diagnosed through imaging.
  • Microscopic examination of the mass revealed atypical large cells and high proliferation rates, with unusual CD30 positivity, raising questions about its classification compared to classic Hodgkin lymphoma.

Article Synopsis
  • Thoracic radiation increases the risk of accelerated coronary artery disease, leading to concerns about outcomes for patients who undergo revascularization after such treatment.
  • A meta-analysis of four studies involving nearly 14,000 patients revealed a significant increase in all-cause mortality for patients with prior thoracic radiation during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but no significant differences were found for cardiac mortality, myocardial infarction, or restenosis.
  • The findings suggest that the higher mortality risk in these patients may be more related to their underlying cancer than the effects of the revascularization procedure itself.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Rossy PSP Centre in Canada is aimed at advancing research in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS) by collecting extensive clinical data and biological samples from patients every six months.
  • - Initial findings from the program, which involved screening 132 patients, showed that the majority had PSP (91) with common symptoms like postural instability, cognitive changes, and Parkinsonism.
  • - Future goals include enrolling patients in earlier disease stages, developing new biomarkers, and fast-tracking well-characterized patients into clinical trials to improve diagnosis and treatment strategies for PSP.

Introduction: Tinea corporis (TC; ringworm or dermatophytosis) is a superficial skin infection caused by , and genera of dermatophytes. We compared the effects of individualized homeopathic medicines (IHMs) in fifty-millesimal (LM) potencies against placebo in TC.

Methods: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, two parallel arms trial was conducted on 62 individuals suffering from TC at the National Institute of Homoeopathy, India.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review investigates the impact of sedation and analgesia on noninvasive ventilation (NIV) for acute respiratory failure (ARF).
  • Despite the growing use of NIV, guidelines on sedation's role are limited, and while some recommend sedation for agitation, definitive recommendations are lacking.
  • The analysis of 16 articles suggests dexmedetomidine is a preferred sedative due to its efficacy and stable cardiorespiratory effects, but further randomized controlled trials are necessary to establish strong evidence-based guidelines.
