Deaths due to differentiated thyroid cancer: a South Island, New Zealand experience: 1984-2009.

Aim: To assess differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) deaths from the northern half of New Zealand's South Island.

Methods: Retrospective review of Christchurch Hospital Thyroid Clinic and Oncology Department clinical records of resident patients who died of differentiated thyroid cancer of follicular cell origin over the 25-year period 1984-2009.

Results: During the 25-year study period 25 patients died from differentiated thyroid cancer.

Subclinical thyrotoxicosis in an outpatient population - predictors of outcome.

Objective: Individuals with endogenous subclinical thyrotoxicosis (SCT) may subsequently require treatment for overt disease. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of progression to hyperthyroidism and factors influencing this outcome.

Design: This is a retrospective analysis of outcome in 96 consecutive patients (aged 16-91 years) diagnosed with SCT over a 6-year period.

Juvenile thyrotoxicosis--a South Island, New Zealand experience with long-term outcome.

Aim: To assess our experience in the management of juvenile thyrotoxicosis.

Method: Retrospective review of thyroid clinic records of juvenile (<16 y) thyrotoxic (JT) patients treated at thyroid clinic between 1972 and 1999. Long-term (>8 y) treatment outcome was assessed.

Thyroid malignancies: a New Zealand South Island thyroid clinic experience 1995-2006.

Aim: To assess the number and histological type of thyroid malignancies occurring in the northern half of New Zealand's South Island (referral population of 553,000).

Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed thyroid malignancies seen at thyroid clinic, Christchurch Hospital between 1995 and 2006 were identified from the thyroid clinic database, and the histological diagnoses and clinical features were reviewed from hospital records.

Results: During the 12-year study period, 213 patients with thyroid malignancy were identified.
