A rare case of isolated thoracic AL-amyloidoma causing complete atelectasis of the right lung.

Tumoral amyloidosis, or amyloidoma, is a benign, but rare form of amyloidosis that has been reported with a favorable prognosis following surgical resection in some case reports. We present a case of acute on chronic respiratory failure secondary to extensive growth of a thoracic amyloidoma causing atelectasis of the right lung. Our case patient had greater morbidity due to late presentation and extensive disease at diagnosis, precluding any surgical intervention.

Intraparotid schwannoma.

Diagnoses most commonly associated with a unilateral parotid mass include sialadenitis, pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin tumor, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. However, rare entities, such as intraparotid schwannoma, must be considered in the differential diagnosis. We present a brief literature review that is illustrative of the current difficulty of preoperative diagnosis of intraparotid schwannoma, which is an exceptionally rare entity, with approximately 80 cases described to date.

A BAC-based physical map of the chicken genome.

A genome-wide physical map constructed with bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) is an essential component in linking phenotypic traits to the responsible genetic variation in the genomes of plants and animals. We have constructed a physical map of the chicken genome from 57,091 BACs (7.9-fold haploid genome coverage) by restriction fingerprint analysis using high-resolution polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
