Objective: 20-40% of individuals whose seizures are not controlled by anti-seizure medications exhibit manifestations comparable to epileptic seizures (ES), but there are no EEG correlates. These events are called functional or dissociative seizures (FDS). Due to limited access to EEG-monitoring and inconclusive results, we aimed to develop an alternative diagnostic tool that distinguishes ES vs.

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) is linked to adverse cardiovascular effects in elderly patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), showing a relationship between deceleration capacity (DC) and heart rate variability (HRV) in response to PM exposure.
  • A study conducted in Erfurt, Germany, involving 56 patients age 50 and older, utilized extensive ECG recordings to analyze how short and long-term PM exposure impacted cardiac metrics, specifically looking at PM's effect on HRV and DC.
  • Results indicated that exposure to elemental (EC) and organic carbon (OC) from PM significantly reduced HRV metrics and DC, suggesting that increased air pollution could elevate cardiac health risks, particularly by lowering parasympathetic heart function.

Epidemiologic studies report associations between particulate air pollution and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are still unclear. We tested the hypothesis that patients with preexisting coronary heart disease experience changes in the repolarization parameters in association with rising concentrations of air pollution. A prospective panel study was conducted in Erfurt, East Germany, with 12 repeated electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings in 56 males with ischemic heart disease.
