Automating Perioperative Inventory Management: A Quality Improvement Project.

Preference cards are a foundation for perioperative inventory management processes; however, they can add to nurses' perceived workload, introduce variability into supply management processes, and increase costs. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement an automated perioperative inventory management system to decrease nurses' workload and increase their efficiency. Goals included improving preference card accuracy, decreasing add-on supplies, and decreasing the supply costs for each procedure.

The Postpandemic Nursing Workforce: Increasing Fill Rates and Reducing Workload Through a Generational Design of Workforce Layers.

Inequities between nursing workforce supply and demand continue to challenge nurse executives in creating the vision for a postpandemic nursing workforce. Health system's workforce redesign strategies must prioritize the changing needs of the multigenerational workforce to maximize the available supply of nurses willing to remain in the workforce. A test of a newly designed flexible workforce framework, aimed to meet the needs of the multigenerational workforce, resulted in increased fill rates and decreased costs of labor.

Case Study: Supply Chain Transformation in the Mercy Health System.

The Mercy case study documents evidence of a clinically integrated supply chain strategy implemented in the peri-operative programs in three of the 46 hospitals in the Mercy system. Mercy became the first US health system to achieve "the perfect order," a supply chain industry standard with end-to-end integration of supply chain best practice in the Mercy system. The reimbursement structure of the US health care system is shifting from a volume-based system to a value-based system. Adopting a comprehensive data analytics platform has become important to health care facilities, in part to navigate this shift. Hospitals generate plenty of data, but actionable analytics are necessary to help personnel interpret and apply data to improve practice.
