Background And Objectives: A significant portion of medical education takes place in primary care settings with family medicine clinician teachers that have variable backgrounds in teaching. Ernest Boyer's concept of education scholarship calls on faculty to systematically study and innovate their teaching practices. This meta-ethnographic review synthesizes the literature on primary care clinician teachers' perspectives and experiences of integrating education scholarship in practice.

Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) is an organometallic compound used as a gasoline additive for its antiknock properties. Human ingestion of MMT has not previously been reported. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who developed seizures and altered mental status after drinking 12 oz.

Sugammadex reverses neuromuscular blockade by the steroidal nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents rocuronium and vecuronium. In 2015, it was approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration for adult use. However, there are ongoing clinical trials investigating its use in the pediatric population.

Purpose: As the number of cancer survivors in the United States increases, quantifying the risks and burden of second primary cancers (SPCs) among cancer survivors will help develop long-term prevention and surveillance strategies. We describe the risk of developing a SPC among survivors of 10 cancer sites with the highest survival rates in the United States.

Methods: Adult patients diagnosed with an index smoking-related (urinary bladder, kidney and renal pelvis, uterine cervix, oral cavity and pharynx, and colon and rectum) and index non-smoking-related (prostate, thyroid, breast, corpus and uterus, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma) cancers were identified from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (2000-2015).

Importance: Risk factors for in-hospital mortality of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are multilevel. Studies have examined the effect of patient-level characteristics on in-hospital mortality; however, there is a paucity of data on multilevel correlates of in-hospital mortality.

Objective: To examine the multilevel associations of patient- and hospital-level factors with in-hospital mortality and develop a nomogram to predict the risk of in-hospital mortality among patients diagnosed with HNC.

Introduction: Hydroxocobalamin, a precursor molecule to vitamin B12, has emerged as the preferred empiric treatment for patients rescued from enclosed-space fires with concern for inhalational injury and potential concomitant cyanide toxicity. Limited data exist on the effects of hydroxocobalamin toxicity, particularly in pediatric patients.

Case Report: We report a case of a healthy three-year old girl who was rescued from an apartment fire and electively intubated by prehospital providers.

Background: Take-home naloxone, an opioid antagonist, has become part of a multimodal approach to curbing opioid-related mortality. However, there is little information about the utility of take-home naloxone in pediatric patients. We report a case of opioid toxicity after exposure to methadone in a pediatric patient, which was successfully reversed with take-home naloxone.

Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug prescribed for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. The risk of adverse hematologic, cardiovascular, and neurologic effects has tempered its use, and reports of overdoses remain rare. We report a case of accidental acute clozapine intoxication in a clozapine-naïve patient, who presented with symptoms mimicking acute stroke and later developed status epilepticus.

Importance: While the adverse association between smoking and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) survival has been well described, there are also inconclusive studies and those that report no significant changes in HNSCC survival and overall mortality due to smoking. There is also a lack of studies investigating the association of marital status on smoking status at diagnosis for patients with HNSCC.

Objective: To examine the association between patient smoking status at HNSCC diagnosis and survival and the association between marital status and smoking in these patients.

Introduction: Flibanserin is a medication recently approved by the FDA for treatment of generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood but is thought to modulate serotonin receptors and increase levels of norepinephrine and dopamine. While much is known about toxicity of other drugs which affect these systems, there is little information about toxicity of flibanserin at this time.

Introduction: Monensin is a veterinary antibiotic with a narrow therapeutic window that has led to lethal intoxication in many animal species. Only two prior cases of human toxicity have been reported, both fatal. We present the first case of survival from severe toxicity following monensin ingestion.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare illness with a high mortality rate. The only favorable management is emergent liver transplantation. About 13% of ALF cases have no clear etiology.

. Submandibular oncocytomas are rare benign salivary gland neoplasms. They are typically found in Caucasian patients aged 50-70 years with no gender preference.

Importance: The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is increasing in the United States and may be underestimated among black individuals. Characterizing the current knowledge level among black individuals is critical to developing interventions to increase awareness.

Objective: To describe the sociodemographic correlates of knowledge and risk perception of HPV and HPV-associated OPSCC among a predominantly black population.

Replication forks are vulnerable to wayward nuclease activities. We report here our discovery of a new member in guarding genome stability at replication forks. We previously isolated a Drosophila mutation, wuho (wh, no progeny), characterized by a severe fertility defect and affecting expression of a protein (WH) in a family of conserved proteins with multiple WD40 repeats.

Context: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is growing within the United States, resulting in both intentional and unintentional exposures to concentrated liquid nicotine or "e-liquid." Nicotine has been culpable for severe poisoning and deaths in the past. However, sources of nicotine have traditionally been from cigarettes, cigars, or pesticides.

Parkinsonian symptoms arise due to over-activity of the indirect striatal output pathway, and under-activity of the direct striatal output pathway. l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) is caused when the opposite circuitry problems are established, with the indirect pathway becoming underactive, and the direct pathway becoming over-active. Here, we define synaptic plasticity abnormalities in these pathways associated with parkinsonism, symptomatic benefits of l-DOPA, and LID.

20-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) contributes to the migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) in vitro, but there are few studies that address its effects on vascular remodeling in vivo. The present study determined whether inhibition of 20-HETE production attenuates intimal hyperplasia (IH) and vascular remodeling after balloon injury (BI). Sprague Dawley rats underwent BI of the common carotid artery and were treated with vehicle, 1-aminobenzotriazole (ABT, 50 mg/kg i.

Dabigatran is an oral direct thrombin inhibitor indicated for thromboembolism prophylaxis in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Since its approval in the United States in 2010, dabigatran-associated hemorrhages have garnered much attention because bleeding rates were higher than initially expected. Additionally, reversing anticoagulation remains challenging.

The small diameter of the carotid artery is not compatible with the evaluation of clinically available endovascular devices in the carotid balloon-injury (BI) model. We developed an endovascular BI model in the rat descending aorta, whose size is compatible with available endovascular instruments. We also tested the hypothesis that neointima formation is enhanced in the aorta of obese Zucker rats (OZR) compared with lean Zucker rats (LZR).

Objective: Dabigatran is a direct thrombin inhibitor approved for anticoagulation in non-valvular atrial fibrillation and, in some countries, for thromboembolism prophylaxis following select orthopedic surgeries. Despite decreased rates of thromboembolism, bleeding remains a risk due to the inability to conveniently monitor anticoagulant effect and the lack of a reversal agent.

Case Series: We present four cases of dabigatran-related bleeding.
