Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the effects of binge drinking on adolescent blood chemistry, focusing on glucose, sodium, calcium, potassium, and acid-base balance, by analyzing medical records from 173 teenagers treated at a Milan hospital between 2013 and 2023.
  • - Results showed that while glucose, sodium, and calcium levels were generally stable, there were significant cases of hypokalemia and an overwhelming presence of acute respiratory acidosis among binge drinkers.
  • - The findings indicate that binge drinking in adolescents leads to notable disturbances in acid-base balance and potassium levels, but has little impact on glucose, sodium, and calcium levels.

: Inborn errors of glutathione metabolism may cause high anion gap metabolic acidosis due to pyroglutamic acid accumulation. Since 1988, cases of this acidosis have been reported in individuals without these defects. : Given the poorly characterized predisposing factors, presentation, management, and prognosis of acquired pyroglutamic acidosis, we conducted a systematic review using the National Library of Medicine, Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases.

The need to monitor the power network is leading to a significant increase in the number of measurement points. These points consist of intelligent electronic devices and instrument transformers (or more in general sensors). However, as the number of devices increases, so does the demand for their characterization and testing.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the intracellular and extracellular volume before and after anesthesia in order to ascertain their variations and determine the potential utility of this information in optimizing intraoperative fluid administration practices. A bioimpedance spectroscopy device (body composition monitor, BCM) was used to measure total body fluid volume, extracellular volume, and intracellular volume. BCM measurements were performed before and after general anesthesia in unselected healthy children and adolescents visiting the Pediatric Institute of Southern Switzerland for low-risk surgical procedures hydrated with an isotonic solution.

The integration of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and other electrical assets has introduced complexities in monitoring and controlling power networks. Consequently, numerous grid nodes have been equipped with sensors and complex measurement systems to enhance network observability. Additionally, real-time power network simulators have become crucial tools for predicting and estimating the behavior of electrical quantities at different network components, such as nodes, branches, and assets.

The catalytic performance of nanoparticles (NPs) of Ag anchored on different supports was evaluated during the selective hydrogenation of 1-pentyne and the purification of a mixture of 1-pentene/1-pentyne (70/30 vol %). The catalysts were identified: Ag/Al (Ag supported on ɣ-Al O ), Ag/Al-Mg (Ag supported on ɣ-Al O modified with Mg), Ag/Ca (Ag supported on CaCO ) and Ag/RX3 (Ag supported on activated carbon-type: RX3). In addition, in situ DRIFTS analysis of 1-pentyne adsorption on each support, catalyst, and 1-pentyne hydrogenation were investigated.

Correct measurement of environmental parameters is fundamental for plant fitness and survival, as well as for timing developmental transitions, including the switch from vegetative to reproductive growth. Important parameters that affect flowering time include day length (photoperiod) and temperature. Their response pathways have been best described in Arabidopsis, which currently offers a detailed conceptual framework and serves as a comparison for other species.

The root system is formed by the primary root (PR), which forms lateral roots (LRs) and, in some cases, adventitious roots (ARs), which in turn may produce their own LRs. The formation of ARs is also essential for vegetative propagation in planta and in vitro and for breeding programs. Root formation and branching is coordinated by a complex developmental network, which maximizes the plant's ability to cope with abiotic stress.

Extreme temperatures, drought, salinity and soil pollution are the most common types of abiotic stresses crops can encounter in fields; these variations represent a general warning to plant productivity and survival, being more harmful when in combination. Plant response to such conditions involves the activation of several molecular mechanisms, starting from perception to signaling, transcriptional reprogramming and protein modifications. This can influence the plant's life cycle and development to different extents.

Ectopic xylary element (EXE) formation in planta is a poorly investigated process, and it is unknown if it occurs as a response to the soil pollutant Cadmium (Cd). The pericycle cells of hypocotyl give rise to EXEs under specific hormonal inputs. Cadmium triggers pericycle responses, but its role in EXE formation is unknown.

Finkelstein-Seidlmayer vasculitis, also referred to as acute hemorrhagic edema of young children, is a rare small-vessel leukocytoclastic vasculitis. This condition is skin-limited, mainly affects infants up to 2 years of age and spontaneously remits. It has been suggested that an infection or a vaccine precede (by ≤ 14 days) this vasculitis.

The distribution network is experiencing a massive deployment of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) such as energy meters, protective devices, and phasor measurement units (PMUs). This phenomenon resulted, on the one hand, in (i) the availability of distributed measurement systems capable of monitoring and collecting measurements from the distribution network, and (ii) increasing awareness of the system operator about the status of the network. On the other hand, such a significant number of devices require to be characterized, over the years, and assessed in both sinusoidal and distorted conditions.

Acute hemorrhagic edema of young children, a benign skin-limited vasculitis, predominantly affects children 2 years of age or younger. The prevalence and clinical features of the Köbner and Pastia signs have never been systematically investigated in this vasculitis. To address this issue, we analyzed the data contained in the Acute Hemorrhagic Edema Bibliographic Database, which incorporates all reports on hemorrhagic edema published after 1969.

Patients who undergo salivary gland, neck, or facelift surgery or suffer from diabetes mellitus often develop Frey syndrome (also known as auriculotemporal syndrome or gustatory sweating). Frey syndrome has been occasionally reported to occur in subjects without history of surgery or diabetes but this variant of Frey syndrome has not been systematically investigated. We searched for original articles of Frey syndrome unrelated to surgery or diabetes without date and language restriction.

Background: The biochemical hallmarks of transient pseudo-hypoaldosteronism associated with a pyelonephritis include hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, and acidosis. We tested if the kidney-urinary tract ultrasound helps in predicting the diagnosis of overt pseudo-hypoaldosteronism in infants with a pyelonephritis.

Cases Presentation: Between 2013 and 2020, we managed 71 previously healthy infants 4 weeks to 24 months of age with a pyelonephritis (42 males and 29 females) and made the biochemical diagnosis of pseudo-hypoaldosteronism in 17 (24%).

The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) affects root system development and quiescent center (QC)-definition in Arabidopsis root-apices. The brassinosteroids-(BRs)-mediated tolerance to heavy metals has been reported to occur by a modulation of nitric oxide (NO) and root auxin-localization. However, how BRs counteract Cd-action in different root types is unknown.

Several transition metals are essential for plant growth and development, as they are involved in various fundamental metabolic functions. By contrast, cadmium (Cd) is a metal that can prove extremely toxic for plants and other organisms in a dose-dependent manner. Charophytes and bryophytes are early-diverging streptophytes widely employed for biomonitoring purposes, as they are able to cope with high concentrations of toxic metal(loid)s without showing any apparent heavy damage.

Developmental and environmental signaling networks often converge during plant growth in response to changing conditions. Stress-induced hormones, such as jasmonates (JAs), can influence growth by crosstalk with other signals like brassinosteroids (BRs) and ethylene (ET). Nevertheless, it is unclear how avoidance of an abiotic stress triggers local changes in development as a response.

Recurrent loss-of-function mutations of BCL6 co-repressor (BCOR) gene are found in about 4% of AML patients with normal karyotype and are associated with DNMT3a mutations and poor prognosis. Therefore, new anti-leukemia treatments and mouse models are needed for this combinatorial AML genotype. For this purpose, we first generated a Bcor knockout mouse model characterized by impaired erythroid development (macrocytosis and anemia) and enhanced thrombopoiesis, which are both features of myelodysplasia/myeloproliferative neoplasms.

In the present work, we investigated the response to Cd in , a cosmopolitan moss (Bryophyta) that can accumulate higher amounts of metals than other plants, even angiosperms, with absence or slight apparent damage. High-performance liquid chromatography followed by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry of extracts from gametophytes, exposed to 0, 36 and 360 µM Cd for 7 days, revealed the presence of γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-EC), reduced glutathione (GSH), and traces of phytochelatins. The increase in Cd concentrations progressively augmented reactive oxygen species levels, with activation of both antioxidant (catalase and superoxide dismutase) and detoxifying (glutathione-transferase) enzymes.
