Background/aim: Previous studies on general transcription factor II E (GTF2E) showed that it is associated with certain groups of diseases, such as colon cancer and trichothiodystrophy, but the global effect of GTF2E on cellular processes is still not widely characterized. This study aimed to investigate and characterize the effect of GTF2E on the transcription level of genes and identify the cellular processes and diseases associated with GTF2E.

Materials And Methods: The human colorectal carcinoma cell line HCT116 used in the study was transfected at a 30 nM concentration with siGTF2E1 or nontarget negative siRNA.

Plants are an important source of food, energy, and bioproducts. Advances in genetics, genomics-assisted breeding, and biotechnology have facilitated the combining of desirable traits into elite cultivars. To ensure sustainable crop production in the face of climate challenges and population growth, it is essential to develop and implement techniques that increase crop yield and resilience in environments facing water scarcity, nutrient deficiencies, and other abiotic and biotic stressors.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by the CCHF virus, a member of the Bunyavirales order and the Orthonairoviridae family. The exact pathogenesis is not fully understood. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNAs that are shown to play a role in various pathological processes of viral diseases.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the legal age using the parameters obtained from radiomic analysis of the mandibular condyle in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.

Material And Methods: The study group consisted of 300 mandibular condyles, which were categorized into six groups based on the age of the patients: 8-11 years, 12-14 years, 15-17 years, 18-20 years, 21-23 years, and over 24 years. Each patient's condyle was segmented individually using the 3D Slicer program.

Since their inception, plastics have become indispensable materials. However, plastics used for extended periods in industrial applications are prone to aging, which negatively impacts their material behavior and performance. To ensure the long-term usability of these materials, they must be tested in real-time, in-service environments to assess degradation.

The requirement of in vitro tissue culture for the delivery of gene editing reagents limits the application of gene editing to commercially relevant varieties of many crop species. To overcome this bottleneck, plant RNA viruses have been deployed as versatile tools for in planta delivery of recombinant RNA. Viral delivery of single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs) to transgenic plants that stably express CRISPR-associated (Cas) endonuclease has been successfully used for targeted mutagenesis in several dicotyledonous and few monocotyledonous plants.

Foreign bodies in the breast are rarely encountered and may infrequently lead to complications such as persistent breast pain, abscess, and/or granuloma formation, pneumothorax, or cardiac tamponade. We aimed to present a case with a foreign body in her right breast, which was diagnostically missed in previous screenings. A 44-year-old asymptomatic woman, who was included in the national breast cancer screening program, was found to have a 2 cm-sized metallic foreign body in the upper-outer quadrant of her right breast via mammographic imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and two conditions: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP), an immune system disease, and Oral Lichenoid Contact Lesions (OLCL), an allergic reaction to dental materials.
  • A total of 60 participants, including 20 with OLCL, 23 with OLP, and 20 healthy controls, underwent biopsies, saliva, and blood tests to detect the presence of EBV DNA using Real-time PCR.
  • Results revealed that EBV DNA was somewhat present in both OLP and OLCL patients, with no significant difference noted compared to the control group, suggesting more research is needed to clarify EBV's role in these conditions

Introduction: Nursing cultural competence is crucial for enhancing the quality of care for refugees. While innovative game-based teaching methods have been used to foster in a wide range of clinical competences, little is known about its use on refugees' care. This study aims to evaluate the effect of these methods on nursing students' cultural competence and attitudes toward refugees.

BCR::ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) pose a substantial risk of thrombosis, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Anticoagulant therapy, historically based on vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), has limitations in preventing recurrent thrombotic events and managing bleeding complications. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) offer a potential alternative with improved pharmacokinetics and compliance.

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) stands out as an energy-efficient and low-carbon footprint technology, currently reliant on polymeric membranes. With their exceptional chemical stability and tunable sieving properties, two-dimensional (2D) nanolaminate membranes present distinct advantages over conventional polymer-based membranes, attracting tremendous interest in the OSN community. Computational approaches for designing innovative 2D nanolaminates exhibit significant potential for the future of OSN technology.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to identify differences in sociodemographic and clinical traits between individuals with schizophrenia who have a criminal record and those without, focusing on factors like intelligence, insight, alexithymia, psychological symptoms, aggression, and impulsivity.
  • Conducted on 100 patients aged 18-65, results showed significant differences in gender, marital status, educational status, and emotional expression difficulties between the two groups.
  • Regression analysis revealed that factors like gender, marital status, educational status, age at illness onset, aggression levels, and impulsivity were linked to criminal behaviors in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting a need for more extensive and varied research.

Electroanatomic mapping guides complex atrial tachycardia ablations; however, challenges may emerge after pulmonary vein isolation. 3D mapping systems can reveal the mechanism of tachycardia and critical areas that need to be ablated. Sometimes, however, these areas may be located deep inside, to the extent that they cannot be successfully reached by endocardial ablation.

  • Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic condition characterized by irregular blood vessel formations that can lead to excessive bleeding, and treatments using antiangiogenic and immunomodulatory drugs like thalidomide show promise in managing the disease.
  • A systematic review evaluated 53 articles, ultimately including 15 studies on thalidomide, which was found to be effective in reducing symptoms like bleeding, but with a high adverse event rate of up to 85%.
  • While lenalidomide and pomalidomide were explored with some success, more research is needed to determine the best treatment approach regarding timing, dosage, and overall therapy strategies for HHT.

Breast and ovarian cancers pose significant therapeutic challenges. We explored the synergistic cytotoxicity of histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis), poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis), and decitabine in breast (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) and ovarian (HEY-T30 and SKOV-3) cancer cell lines that were exposed to HDACi (panobinostat or vorinostat), PARPi (talazoparib or olaparib), decitabine, or their combinations. HDACi, PARPi, and decitabine combinations had synergistic cytotoxicity (assessed by MTT and clonogenic assays) in all cell lines (combination index < 1).

  • Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are linked to an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but how sex affects this relationship has been unclear.
  • A study analyzed data from 1,858 patients to see how Lp(a) correlates with CAD in men and women, using two Lp(a) thresholds (≥30 and ≥50 mg/dL).
  • Results showed that Lp(a) levels predict CAD risk differently by sex: ≥30 mg/dL was significant for women only, while ≥50 mg/dL was relevant for both men and women, suggesting different risk assessment methods might be needed based on sex.
