Beneficial effects of adenotonsillectomy in children with sickle cell disease.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) is frequently performed in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Our aim was to evaluate the impact of this surgery on overnight oxygenation and rates of complications in these patients. Children with SCD who underwent T&A between 2008 and 2014 in two tertiary hospitals were retrospectively evaluated.

Introduction: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common inherited diseases worldwide. It is associated with lifelong morbidity and reduced life expectancy. Hydroxyurea (HU) has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of vaso-occlusive episodes in SCD.
